The size given is the size of the fish for sale, not their adult size. The minimum tank requirements are for that fish at that size, not what he will need when mature.
Just go to Home Depot and get some plexiglass. It doesn't have to be strong, just cover it. Take a paper template and have them cut it for you. $20 at the most.
Well I guess I'll unsubscribe to this thread. I was going to refer beginners to it for help, but with only 4 out of 20 posts actually listing any choices, whats the point. On behaf of all beginners making an effort to learn, thanks anyway.
Just so you know, even a book about fish, and certainly a website can be wrong. According to the scientific description of the adult Melanopus, the ventrical fins are solid black. They range in color from the bright red of a Tomato to dark brown. A million people saying they think it's one does...
Never used one at home, just at work. One of our guys on 1st shift could make one in 15 minutes, I suck with a saw so for me an hour at least. We'd make 6' x 6" ones with jaccuzi pumps mostly, always counterflows.
One thing I can tell you, always use a plan that has an adjustable length tube...

They blow water at the sand. They were almost impossible to count at the warehouse. They'd all be buried, I'd have to stir them up with the net hanle then they'd whip around so much all you could see was a sand cloud.
