    removing bio balls

You may also keep the balls in slatwater at each stage to ensure they will be ready if you need them...just add some of your tank water to a five gallon bucket every couple of days and run some air in it for O2 and circulation. They should keep colonized with that.

    jealious wife!

My wife (love her to death) says we work to support the tanks...when she gets really down on them...I make her something new for the house....and on very extreme circumstanecs I take her to the LFS...that always works... Most recently though...I suggested moving all the filtration to the...

    what is ro/di water

You can buy a basic 3 stage RO/DI unit not made by the brands carried by online fish supply sites for around 100.00...seach some of the bigger auction sites and look for RO/DI units made by companies not geared towards the aquarium trade. When looking for one...look for the different...

    Filter System

Fluval is a product name...it is a canister filter. Wet/dry's are (set aside from natures own) probably the best types of filtration. If not for performance...for convenience. I just finished putting both my tanks filters through the floor and into the basement. One tank I purchased a Tidepool...

    Substrate dilemma please help!!!

The thing with the Southdown play sand is not so much the granule size or color...it is the fact it is not silca based sand. Silca based sand leech silcates into your tank as the water is flowing across it. I am not 100% sure, but I do believe the Quickrete play sand is silca based.

    i'm an idiot

Not stinky wet socks...those socks you get out of the dryer which didn't dry all the way and are still damp...I don't suppose a pair of socks straight from the gym and your sneakers would be such a good idea in the same microwave you prepare your food in...

    Opinions on Tank Manufacturers

Randy12...no need for a picture I know what you are talking about. All my tanks have always had a light which goes from end to end. Both my light cases I made went from end to end as well. I wouldn't think any prolonged or heavy weight on the straps would be a good idea, in my opinion.

    Opinions on Tank Manufacturers

Wow... Someone mentioned lights resting on a center brace? That is not a good thing. The center brace is intended to prevent the front and back from bowing...not resting your lights on. As for brand name...it is a personal choice. As for glass vs. acrylic...both have their merits...both have the...

    what is ro/di water

RO/DI is reverse osmosis and de-ionazation. A combination of filtration methods. The RO portion is a very fine membrane in which water passes through removing most impurities...The DI portion removes negative and positive ions...like phosphates, nitrates and others. Unless your tap water doesn't...

Why does my longnose swim upside down....

Maybe he has picked up a nasty "crack" habit during the night or something. Could be just disorientated with the lights out. You may ask in the disease forum about that though. I do recall something being said about that before somewhere. I just cannot recall...

    Opinion on purchase

You know Pete...I was cranking fresh water for many years...then one day with the influence of a friend...I decided to go salt. Anyways...as most do with something new...dive in head first...after nearly drowning, the swim back up to the surface was a chore...everything has turned out alright...

    i'm an idiot

Heat the water portion in smaller containers (microwaves work great) to heat it faster...poor that back into the jug and repeat the cycle until it is heated to appropriate temp. Once your temp in your tank drops like that suddenly, you need to bring it back up slowly to prevent an ich outbreak...

    Opinion on purchase

Limited budgets...they really suck!!! Anyways...always buy your hardware before any live items...rock, etc...once you get all your hardware...then get it running and get your live stuff. This will also allow you extra time for adjustments, replacements, etc. Good luck.

spray bar help - zepplin and others

From my own experience with two setups...you're wrong with the dribble at the end. I have solid pressure throughout the entire length of spray bar. I suppose it would matter with the water pumps capability.

    water pump

I purchased the mag 7 to take water from sump below aquarium up thru a spray bar, about 4 feet total...i was not pleased with the performance. water pressure was too low. I didn't realize how low until I hooked the little giant up. Now I lift the water from the basement up and thru a 3/4 inch...

spray bar help - zepplin and others

Here is a cheesy windows paint diagram. I think you will get the idea from it. 1/2 inch outlet from pump I keep at 1/2 spray bar. The other pump with the 1 inch outlet, I used 1" PVC all the way to the top of tank, then reduced it to 3/4 for the actual spraybar.
