    Live Rock

Just to clarify the part about the dead becoming alive...... (there's a movie in that statement!!) Just think of it like head lice--if you rub your head up against someone with head lice, you, too, will soon have head lice. So, too, is it with live and dead rock. If you place plain rock next to...

    territorial Damsel?

sorry to say so but we had a similar experience, we kept taking back the most aggressive, but then someone else would step in and become just as aggressive as the fish we just took back. One by one they all went back to the LFS. Better to lose them all before you have to tear down a whole tank...

How much of a yellow tinge does your syphoned-out water change water have?

we have a carnival goldfish that just won't die, every time I change the water in his little two gallon tank, the water is really golden color--we always thought he was shedding!!! Guess I could change the water more often, but he must be tough, he's lived over two years as it is.

ITS ALIVE, wait no its not

Nothing could survive out of water for two years. If the rock became "alive" it would have been because it was placed in a tank with real "live" rock which "seeded" or spread its coralline algae and/or critters to the old rock. (which is what olsenjb said he/she did--placed some fresh live rock...

    Screen names

my kids are D (dave) S (steve) and A (amy) so I am dsa_mom. I often see license plates with dsa on them, just as random letters from the dmv and I think "that should be my plate" but those personalized plates are expensive, so I never tried to get one. Maybe I should drop a hint for mother's day!

    Second Attempt. Now What? !!

Sounds like you are well on your way. Most people do not recommend an airstone--the bubbles cause more salt creep than any good they might do. A powerhead will cause enough aeration and circulation. If you choose to keep the airstone, the air won't be detrimental to the live rock. Most people...

    Bow Front Reef Aquarium Setup

You can read tons of info on this site by using the search feature. Remember, the number one requirement in this hobby is patience!! I'd advise you to watch the board and read as much as you can before you make any decisions about equipment. That way you really really know what you want before...

    Dry live rock@lfs?

If anything, I would consider it as possible base rock if you really like the size and shape of the pieces. I would say there is nothing "alive" of any value, it probably would need to be scrubbed and left to dry out before putting it in your tank, unless you like that algae look!! Good Luck!

    1st waterchange

Not for a water change, just add salt to get your right salinity level. Many people will salt the water and let it sit with a powerhead for a day or two to totally mix. Add calcium or other trace elements to your tank as usual after the water change, but not necessary to do anything special to...

    Royal Grammar Behaviour

I often see ours coming out of a crevice in the rock that I never would have thought he could fit into! They do like to hide in their own little piece of the tank. Ours seems to swim at kind of a 45 degree angle sometimes--we used to think he was either drunk or sick, but then he'd swim...

    Tag-along crab

I can't ID for sure for you, my guess would be any of many "rock" crabs. As for safety, I can only relate what we saw--at first the crab (another hitchhiker) in our tank was timid and hard to find, but as he grew he became bolder and was much more visible. He finally had to go when I saw him on...

    LR colors

Is there an ingredient list on that stuff? I believe that coralline (the color) will spread if conditions are right: good water movement to spread spores and adequate calcium level in the water (like about 400-500 ppm)(not sure if thats the correct way to measure calcium, but I think so) What...
