    idea for top off water

We, too, run a dehumidifier in the basement in all but winter months--I would hesitate to use that water, though, because the collection tray or bucket gets slimy and I don't even want to think of what it is that makes it that way. Believe me, we are economy reefers, and I still think the ro/di...

Help, something has invaded my tank?

Hot water worked for us--however we didnt run the rock under the water, just filled a syringe (you might have one from a testing kit) with really hot water and then squirted it into the center of the dreaded thing. it got all mushy and then just disappeared. Good Luck.

This is a perfect example of why this BB is the best--here is a situation where ppl gave their opinions, differed, and nobody had to call anybody else an idiot, etc. Way to go!

OT: Where are all of you guys from?

Greendale, WI suburb of Milwaukee, a very famous and historic community because it was one of three planned communities started by the federal govt after the depression to create work in the building of the village as well as a cheap place to live. The original inhabitants actually paid Uncle...

How Many Started Out Fresh Then Went Salt & Reverse

You can always have fish when you are older and work full-time, but a dog is hard to keep if you have to leave it alone all day. So I say go for the pooch now and just keep learning and planning for the fish "some day".

    live rock

If you like the size and shape of the rock, by all means keep it. I'd scrub off any crud and put it in the tank with some live rock and eventually the coralline on the live rock will spread to the used-to-be-live rock. Be sure you have enough calcium in the tank and good water movement to...

Will a black light affect the reef tank?

I'm not clear, Jumpfrog, did you get rid of the light or the serpent star?

Clam and others on live rock.

i just looked up some pictures, we have serpent stars and I think yours is, too, with a banded like arm rather than all black (brittle).

Clam and others on live rock.

We have two of those starfish--we call them brittle stars, not sure if that name is really correct. They live under rocks in our tank and have never come all the way out when anyone is looking, just stick out their arms to reach for food. They eat leftover flake food that falls to the sand and...

    r.o. units

Many people have them installed right under a kitchen sink. We here are plumbing-impaired, so ours just sits on the laundry room floor next to the utility sink. It has an intake (simple screw on valve to the faucet) an output (pours into an 18 gal rubbermaid) and a waste line (just lays in the...

Dead Hermit Crab With No Shell

I wouldn't try moving around rock to find the shell, just believe that its there somewhere. Maybe another crab will want to move in, if so, he will find the empty shell. Why would a hermit die? Who knows. they are affected by changes in temp and salinity. Maybe he was a 100 yr old hermit.
