    Flower Pot Coral Help

No laughing, but soon, trying to learn to use new camera, I just vieo'd my tank and learned to play it back. Now have just found out to take stills I have to get a card instead of dvd. Us oldsters are slow on these technicle things. Then I suppose I will have to learn how to post a pic in...

    How Much Live Rock

Hey the old rule of thumb is for approx. 1.5 lbs per gal. That works well for most everyone, but if you have a deep sand bed or plenum system you can cut back to about 1 lb per gal. As far as how you want it to look it's up to you; for nitrogen cycle completion then stick with at least 1.5 lbs...

How do you position your Power Heads?

Depends on each tank. My 210 has a Seio M1100 on either end and 4 MJ 1200's with rotating flow adapters up, down, and angled, plust two overflow returns. The currents are chaotic.

    Flower Pot Coral Help

Okay, I asked Acrylic51 about it awhile back and purchased a green/tan gonipora about 3 months ago. Mine has more than double in size in 3 months. I believe it's all in the stock you choose or get via mail order. Some come in good and others not. Mine is directly under a 250 watt MH 10,000 K...

    Need your help

Not to worry been done before. First see if you can round up a couple hands to help out. At new site - Get three 35 gallon rubber maid tubs (about $10.00 each at Wal-Mart). Mix up about 20 gallons new salt water in each one. Add a power head and a heater. Contact friends and lfs - people...

    SS125 Skimmer

Same problem with both 225 and 125. The instruction manual covers break in time and I have to say it has been that way for last two I have set up. I can tell you though the white pad under the black one glogs easily. I removed it and replaced it with the blue scrub pad material for cleaning...

    New set up

Just scub the cyano off good with salt not fresh water. Then get your aquascapining to where you want it. Then make sure you have enough flow. Cyano usually won't form where current flows are adequate. Good luck and keep us posted on new tank set up!

    Salt Question

Yes Reef Crystals is made by Same Manufacturer as Instant Ocean. As far as I know IO works great for most salt situations, but a reef system has more demanding aspects. So that is why they beefed up Ca, Alk, Mg, and other levels and came up with Reef Crystals.

    Salt Question

The first 18 months of my reef was all Instant Ocean. I was constantly adjusting Alk and Ca. Switched to Reef Crystals and now basically water changes and some Alk adjustment weekly and Ca monthly.

    Clam feeding question

Never put any skimmate from your skimmer back into your system! Your clam will actually filter out nitrogenous wastes from your tank before the bacteria can break it down. And yes when you scrape/clean your glass the organics are then suspended in the water making more particulate food for your...

    Chili Coral

They are a coral and not a true sponge. They are normally found growong upside down, under ledges, overhangs, & cave entrances. They therefore do not demand or need much light. They do need strong currents to let them filter out food particles. At night mine has great polyp extension. Bodu...

    what to keep Acros?!?!

Hey sounds like everyone else agrees with Calcium and alkalinity needing to be raised. I concur there. But on reading about light acclimatization - KISS (keep it simple stupid) is a great motto. Place your corals where you want them (hopefully will have researched needs). Place 2 pcs of...

    what test to perform?

That about covers it. For first three months you will probably run them all weekly. After that most I know just test nitrates, Ca, Alk, & pH. After a water change I suggest running the whole gammut of tests to make sure.

Thank you. I have a friend who purchased one 3 weeks ago and it's one of the prettiest fish I have seen. So far no observed coral picking in his tank.

    How much PUMP?

Okay - most overflows are rated at about 600 g/h. You have one in each corner. So you will be draining around 1200 g/h. If your head hieght is just from sump pump to overflow you are probably dealing with 4 - 5 feet of head height. So buy a pump that will do at least that! Think of 180 X 15...
