Throught I'd share a little essay I wrote in school

Here's an anecdote to cheer you up Zack. Many years ago, in New York City, a very scruffy looking man walked into a Cadillac dealership in lower Manhattan. The salesmen in their meticulous suits and silk ties paid little attention to the man, since he was dressed in dirty pants, an old shirt not...

    90G v.s. 180G

I'll tell you what...I would go with 2 90's. We had so much trouble deciding what kind of tank to go with when we started out, we left an empty cycled tank up for weeks. We finally did what I suggested, went with 2. We now have more...but hey, what the heck. The thing is, there are fish in my...

Starting a new tank! Eclipse System. What do u think?

Hmmm. 300 bucks. Well....................... I'd go with a 55 gallon All-glass, theres 80 of it, and a nice metal stand, theres 40 of it. NOW you're talking possibilities. First of all, you have all the options to do whatever you want later on, the eclipse limits you in that respect. ALSO, the...

    Hypo Question

Ah...I see. What I left out was, the 44 day trial was WITH host fish. Without host fish the ich parasite was gone in 6 hours in hyposaline water (1.010)

    Hypo Question

Anthem, these were new to me also, but the source was reliable, and I adjusted my thinking based on them. These came from Dr. Floyd Crista, he's a marine biologist at the Sea Aquarium in Riverhead, NY. When we were there we got into a discussion about ich, and he handed me these research papers...

    Hypo Question

To be absolutely sure, no doubt, no ich, no problem...wait 45 days from the FIRST day of 1.009 to begin raising salinity. In a paper I recently read about the life cycle of the ich parasite, the longest recorded life span (without a host) was 4 days, and the longest recorded life span in 1.010...

how do u tell the sex of a cleaner shrimp?

Hmmm. My wife leaning over my shoulder, and I quote: "You don't have to worry about it, its easy. If you feed it, take care of it, and are really nice to it and it doesn't even show itself the next day, you have a male." You can't make these things up. Sigh.

    Breeding Ghost shrimp?

Ok...we bought one of those 2.99 5 1/2 gallon all-glass jobbies from the pet store. We have a cheap heater and an airstone in there, and an aquaclear 150. We keep the water at 76 degrees, 1.023, ph 8.2. The bottom of the tank has a plastic sheeting with slots in it. We feed artemia cysts...

    Breeding Ghost shrimp?

Its actually pretty simple if you can spare the space. Simply get a large amount of them (20-30) and let them live ALONE. Their offspring are greedily eaten by anything else in the tank, so they need to be in a species only. We use a 5 gallon tank with a slotted bottom that we can collect them...

    Sea horse + algae =?

Hola -- there are species of ghost shrimp that live in full saltwater. We keep them in a refugium to feed the offspring to our seahorse, and we have had them at 1.023 salinity for over a year. When we order them, we specify fresh or saltwater species, and they're both readily available. We have...

    Sea horse + algae =?

You might want to get some ghost shrimp. These little guys are cool to watch, compatible with seahorses, and love to eat hair algae. Great addition to a horse tank. Oh, and unlike EVERYTHING in this hobby, they're CHEAP!

To paint or not to paint....

On one of our tanks I wanted a black back, so we painted it with Krylon spray paint. Dried overnight and we love the way it looks. If I had it to do over again tho, I would have gone with a dark, dark blue rather than black, so keep this in mind when you paint. Once you do, you're stuck with the...

    Coral Banded Shrimp

CBSes are scavengers...but they're ALSO hunters of opportunity. For years our CBS has attempted to grab our cleaner shrimps, but never ever caught them. He will sneak up behind them on their rock once the lights are out, and make a lunge, but the cleaners just move away, and the CBS slinks back...

Lateral Line* Hole In The Head* Kole Tang?

Do you have a sump with substrate or a refugium? If so...you might want to add some Ecosytem Miracle Mud to it. I don't know why it works, I don't know how it works. But I do know that it works. Here's a photo of a purple tang we were given by an LFS because they figured he'd be dead in about a...

    Yellow Tang

One of the best foods for yellow tangs (all of the zebra species actually) is Thera-A from New Life. Tangs suck this stuff up, and its supposedly good for their immune system, which is great with the ich-prone zebras. It contains all the proteins they need. I supplement this with spirulina...

    I need help with tangs!!

Sarcasm noted Cobra, and well done too :)....but keep in mind I knew from the onset of putting that tang in the 10 gallon that it was only temporary, never in a million years would I designate something that small as a home for a tang. My son has a nano-reef (12 gals) and he's begging for a blue...

    Check this tank out

Very cool tank, but I don't know where the company is coming from with that price. You can get a 4,000 circular like that with everything for under $50,000. There are a lot of custom builders out there that will do it, and some for even less then that. Look around, and forget the lottery tickets!

    Product reviews....

We used DT's for a while, then got a deal on TLF Marine Snow, so we switched to that. Can't tell the difference.

How many tangs in a 110 gal reef?

You're going to need another plan :) We did the same thing, waited for a tiger oscar to go...to use the tank. We're still waiting. He's 9. Sheesh. PS: Anyone want to adopt a 9 year old tiger oscar?

    Green Chromis

Nah, I don't think the pork will eat the chromises, they're quick, and cautious. 7 or 8 are great, such an easy fish, they eat anything, they're very hardy, basically drop em in and forget em. The one thing mentioned that is VERY important is rock for them to hide in at night. When our lights...
