hermits will eat algae.

It sounds like a phosphate problem... You could try some small red hermit crabs, about 1 per gallon. You could also add a few more snails. Good luck Kelly

if it is caulerpa just pull it off, trying to get it all including the roots, it should not come back.

It should not hurt it... I sometimes am not home in the evening, and the lights stay on till I get there, no problem on this end.

I have one, and like it a lot. It is fairly shy though, if you get to close to the tank, it will hide unless it is feeding time.
