custom ~300 gallon in the making, questions

That is a fantastic plan! However, I would recommend glass as opposed to acrylic for a tank to be constructed in this manner. Silicone adheres to glass much better, plus it won't scratch nearly as easily. Also, the concrete can be coated with epoxy paint designed for the aquaculture industry...

post pictures of your favourite fish

Here's a pic of my Multicolor Angel. Even though he's become somewhat of a pest in my tank, he's still my favorite.

    Anyone have a purple Goniopora?

I believe Steve Weast has one in his 850g and that it's been with him for a number of years.

    First Tank vs. Current Tank

While browsing through old photos on my PC today, I came across a pic of my first SW tank from years ago. I thought it would be fun to post that pic and compare it to my tank today! So feel free to post pics of your first tank and compare them with your current tank as it is today. If your...

    Rust and water conditions?

The rust shouldn't cause any nitrate or alkaline spikes, but there is a chance that it could be releasing toxic metals into the water. But if everything has been fine to this point, I wouldn't worry about it, but I would try to get it out of the tank if possible.

    live rock

Is there anything living in the tank now? If not, I would just recommend putting it straight into the tank and recycle the tank. Otherwise, put the new LR into a Rubbermaid tub, add a heater and some flow, and cure it there for a few weeks while performing occasional water changes.

Nice! And congrats on the corals!

Are Lee's brand of protein skimmers good?

They're not bad. They employ the tried and true conter-current method, and as long as you are using a good air pump and keeping the airstone clean, you should have no problems with this skimmer.

    Calcium Level Question

You also want to make sure that it is in check with the Alkalinity level. If not, the Calcium level could fluctuate wildly and even cause a precipitation event.

    40 gal additions ??

The invert list looks good (good call on skipping the blue legs). As for a fish, how about a Royal Gramma? They are very colorful and have an interesting personality.

    Opinion on bulbs !

The Aqualine bulbs require a pulse start ballast, and assuming that's what you have, I would recommend sticking with the AB 10,000K (13,000K) bulbs or trying the Ushio 10,000K. I've used both in the past, and can say that they're both great, with the AB giving off a slightly bluer light. Plus...

    MH lighting wattage question

0.5WPG isn't going to mean as much as the intensity of the lights. For instance, 2x250W MH will "punch" light to the bottom of your tank better than 2x175W MH. But the 250's may be too much for what corals you plan to keep, so be sure to take that into consideration.

    Glass Tank vs. Acrylic Tank

Having owned both acrylic and glass tanks over the years (my current tank is acrylic), I will say that they both have their advantages. But if you're looking at a tank in the 75-90 gallon range, I would recommend going with glass. Glass tanks are quite a bit cheaper than acrylic until you get...

Are we the wierdest Reef Keepers in the world, or what?

There's nothing too crazy about an invert only tank. A guy in my club has a 100-something SPS reef without any fish at all in the tank. Without having to feed any fish, he's able to keep nutrient levels low.

    Post your "fish resume"

It all started when my dad set up a 20 gal extra high FW tank for me when I was 7 (1985). After a few years of maintaining that tank (basically watching the fish, and helping out with the occaisional water change), we moved the fish to a 10 gal, and just dumped some IO into the 20 (my dad kept...

    Streaming Audio Ripping?

I don't know of any software that is capable of ripping streaming audio, but what I do to capture streaming audio (even then, I only capture what I'm legally entitled to) is to output the computer's audio into a recording device (my preference is Mini Discs). The audio usually requires a little...

    Anyone use this skimmer?

When I ran the Remora, I was constantly adjusting the height of the collection cup (the only way to adjust that skimmer, and I assume the Urchin functions the same way). I can't speak personally about the Urchin vs. the Urchin Pro, but I have heard good things about the Pro.

    How Old Are You?

I'll be 27 in a few hours (my Bday is tomorrow). I started my first FW tank in '86, my first SW tank in '88, and have kept both on and off since. I've been back into SW [hr] since '99 and have kept reefs exclusively since late '02.
