I read a post awhile back where someone had made a little hole in the top of the skimmer and placed an air stone inside to increase the bubbles. Mine works fine so I see no need to modify it. After about a 1 1/2 years I did however replace the pump with a bigger one. Works better then ever now.

I get my water from a vending machine for $.25 a gallon. The water goes through a filtration process that is unmatched by almost all home filtration units. The best quality I feel that I could buy and the price is not that bad either.

Very little cutting required to make this guy fit.

What is your nitrate level? A high nitrate level can be an indication of a build up of other organics causing the smell.

Sometimes things like that just happen. He may have been sick or handled wrong before you got him. It's always best to ask the store to feed the fish to make sure they are eating before taking them home.
