    OT - JAWS, the movie

...I'm watching it on AMC...I really think that it gave a wrong, long lasting impression of sharks (usually generalized), but I have to admit that it has been my favorite movie since I was a kid. Anyone have a shark tank?

    Chocolate chip starfish...again...sorry.

I have 2 in my FOWLR 55 and have not noticed any damage. I think they may have eaten one of my turbo snails, but it could have been dead before they closed in. I agree that they are slow, but they are still kinda fun to watch! Mine are quite the acrobats!

    I love shrooms

I have a 55. I'm not overly concerned about the price for lighting, hovever, I wasn't intending on getting into chillers. As for my shroom, I've had the PH aimed on it overnight and into today and it hasn't budged - maybe it's as stubborn as I am...patience is a virtue of mine:D

    biological filtration

Good question! I have a HOT Magnum filter that I used to run when I needed carbon and/or phosphate sponges. I haven't needed it for a while so now it is empty and runs for surface agitation. A refugium is a beneficial addition!

    I love shrooms

Thanks MichaelTX - How much additional lighting should I add? Could I get away with two double ballasts without a chiller ?(again, I'm still trying to completely understand lighting:) ) Also, in an effort to propogate my spotted mushrooms, I aimed a powerhead at one in hopes that it will move...

    live rock turning brown???

You should be all set!:) Have fun with your new tank! It's hard to wait through cycling, but it's sooooo well worth it when you do it right! It's a good thing that you are taking this time to gain info! Also, as far as diatoms - make sure you don't overstock or overfeed!

WHOA - that's incredible j21kickster - how many gallons? And Coralcollector - size does matter.... and motion in the ocean is good, too....300 gals., sweeeet! :D And Dockery - I wouldn't sweat it - I'd be in heaven with a 220:)

    biological filtration

Argonite, Southdown play sand and a big scoop of sand from a friends established tank. Are you going to have a reef or a fish only?

    biological filtration

You can definately rely on just biological filtration with LR/LS. A DSB 4-6" and at least 1-1.5 lbs./gal. of LR is recommended, depending on your bio-load. The LR will seed the sand with beneficial bacteria - although adding any amount of live sand for a DSB wouldn't hurt, either. I would...

    Spring Break Pics

Those were great!!!!! Thank you! I'm in awe of marine museums - especially considering what I have learned about keeping a tank of my own. I noticed a couple of those tanks had a substrate that looked almost like river rock pebbles - why not sand?

    live rock turning brown???

Agreed, it's diatom algae and it's a natural part of the cycle - usually towards the end. It will go away as long as it does not have anything to feed on (phosphates, silicates, etc.) What kind of water are you using?

A 220 - I'm jealous! Did you have SW experience before starting in November? If not, you have done your homework - kudos:)

    Deepest sand bed...

so there would really be no point in having a DSB in a 10-20 refugium? I want to set one up - I'm still in the research phase.....

    I love shrooms

.....just now it's the saltwater shrooms instead of the ones that give me laughing fits when ingested JK time marches on................. Anyway, I have two 48" bulbs - one 40 watt actinic and one 40 watt 20,000K bulb - both Coralife. Please forgive me, I'm still trying to learn about...

    Mushroom propogation

Do mushrooms need to be a certian size before you can propogate them? I have two small ones - slighty smaller than a quarter- could I still cut the tops off and secure them to another rock with a pantyhose, or, aim a powerhead at them and hope they move?

    lr purchase

I bought about 25# of Figi LR from this site about 4 months ago and have been very happy with it - a good variation of sizes and shapes. There was only a small amount of purple coraline, however, it spread very quickly! It is cured but you will naturally get some die off during shipping - I...

    Help building a refigum

sorry if this is dumb, but, how do you pump the water back into the main tank at exactly the same rate as it flows into the refugium?
