KIP or other Nikon 5700 users.

Ok I'm pretty good with macro shots and manual focus. Most of the time I prefer to use no flash because I think it better represents the true color of the coral, when I use flash I get a variety of results in color and lighting. The thing I really don't like is when I use flash in macro mode on...

    reef tanks???? pros, please help..

Definately wash it and I'd probably put it in a bucket of SW for a couple weeks to let any extra stuff inside the rock to decompose before putting in in your tank so you don't pollute your tank.

    Close to giving up!

You'd probably be supprised how much phosphate you throw into your tank via food. I have a 75 with 1 clown, 1 firefish, and 1 very small clown goby, I also run Rowaphos and still have small patches of algae but its under control. One thing I need to start doing is blowing off the rocks every...

    reef tanks???? pros, please help..

If you've done freshwater for 9 years you should be aware of the nitrogen cycle. The bacteria in LR and biowheels and such turn organic wastes into ammonia then nitrites then nitrates then nitrogen which is released into the air. The reason for a skimmer is it removes the organics before they...

    reef tanks???? pros, please help..

100lb of LR in a 55 is a bit too much especially if you're low on $$$, one option is getting half LR and half base rock which in time will be come live. If you go to ---- and check out the seller HIROCKS has has nice hawiian base rock for very cheap, I have 50-60lb of it in my tank.

    reef tanks???? pros, please help..

I'm not trying to get into a pissing match, I'm not trying to say I know everything but in the time I've posted 1300 posts here and 400 at another large site I've read probably 20x that many threads and I'm saying 90% of successful tanks over 20gal run skimmers. YES its possible to run one...

Magic_carp and other nilsen reactor users come look please

I'd avoid depending solely on a float switch because if it fails then you have 10gal of kalk water in your tank which is bad news. If you have the money you could go with a high quality dosing pump like the Litermeter III and then you can just dial in how much kalk you want dosed per day. I plan...

    reef tanks???? pros, please help..

I'm not trying to tell you what you HAVE to do, I'm just giving you the most widely proven setup for setup of a reef tank. I researched for 7 months before I started my tank, my tank has been up for about 7 months and so far is a success. A book will get the basics out of the way so you can ask...

    reef tanks???? pros, please help..

The first thing you need to figure out is if you have the funds to keep a succesful reef tank, In my opinion you must use RO/DI water, a skimmer and LR for a successful tank. I'd also suggest using a fine 1" bed of sand. No other filtration is required besides the skimmer, Lr and the occasional...

    Embarassing questions on Corals

I wouldn't consider an anenome a coral but my ricordea yuma's move around very slowly sometime to find a spot they like better. By very slowly I mean over several days.

    SEIO pic

My 820 produces a very low velocity wide dispersion flow pattern, I think you'll be fine with them, maxi's are much more of a violent flow. I haven't even heard of the Tunze skimmers yet. Also the suction cups work fine by themselves, some people are worried about them failing and creating a...

    cracked aquarium

If its glass than you're pretty well screwed. Acrylic you may be able to fix, I've heard of putting another piece of acrylic over the area thats cracked, I've also heard to drill a small hole on each end of the crack where the crack stops to make it stop spreading. I'd ask a acrylic shop near you.

    Haitian live rock

I've got 25lb of it but $90 is a little high but not bad. Mine colored up nicely and has nice shapes. Don't expect a ton of life in it though when you buy it, you will get some worms but thats about it.

    10 gallon filter

if you doing just fish than no you don't need a powerhead, if you have only soft corals I'd also say probably no but if you get into LPS and SPS corals than I'd put a maxijet 600 or something in there.

    hey, Culligan man

Ya it would probably be ok but I'd suggest to buy a TDS meter for about $20 to make sure its about 10 or below to make sure they change the filters out regularly.

    is this too many fish

I'd say you're definately pushing it with that list, and I'd definatly say no way for 2 mandarin's in a new 75, I'd say maybe one when you get a good pod population, I plan on putting a blue hippo tang in my 75 but there's going to be little else as far as fish.
