    Adding LR

My tank is established and I just bought 20-25 lbs. of LR from this site. How long do I need to keep it in my holding tank? Will it start a mini-cycle if I just put it right in?

    PH Help

Mine is 8.2 and has remained stable right from the beginning without having to mess with it. However, I'd like to refresh your question because I'm also curious and would to hear from the more experienced!:D

    Too Much LR?

When I get up to ~55lbs of LR with my DSB can I ditch my canister filter and just keep my skimmer? I keep hearing negative opinions about canisters, although, I realize it is much more of an issue for reef keepers! Or, perhaps more is better:confused: I don't have a sump...yet...:D

tank cycled , how much longer ?

How long have you been cycling? What did you cycle with? What is your filtration? Sounds like you may want to do a water change. When the ammonia and nitrite is zero it usually indicates that your cycle is finished, however, you shouldn't add fish with nitrate so high. Give us a lil' more...

    Chocolate chip starfish trouble?

I have 2, now, and they both love raw shrimp (only the kind from my favorite deli, of course). Usually, they ask for it by climbing to the top and sticking an arm out! I love my lil' buddies ( I do not have a reef so all is well );)

    Carbon

I have carbon in my HOT Magnum filter - does the carbon really need to be replaced monthly? Does it accumulate a healthy colony of beneficial bacteria? Would it be better to use the micron cartridge instead?

    Depth of sand bed

My sand bed is just shy of 4" - do I need to make it deeper? I'd rather not, however, good biological filtration is what I'm looking for......

    Too Much LR?

My lfs told me that I really only need 20-30lbs of LR for my 55 gal. FOWLR - I was shooting for about 50-60lbs. - any thoughts? I have a HOT filter, a Berlin Protein skimmer and about a 4" sand bed.

    Help with water levels

Well, to start, I would get a bigger tank to keep that Trigger. And, given that your tank is still cycling, I would allow it some more time before messing with it -- what did you initiate the cycle with?

    HOT Magnum

I have the carbon in my Magnum filter- does carbon eliminate essential trace elements for a FOWLER even with a supplement? Do I need this? My only other filtration (other than the biological listed below) is a Berlin protein skimmer.

    QUEEN ANGELs EYE BULGING

I have recently had the same problem with my new Coral Beauty who is currently in my quarantine tank - I posted the same question on the disease forum and Beth told me to use Maracyn Two for five days with a double dose (in quarantine) do a large water change after each dose with main tank...

Help- can I do Saltwater with what I have?

I would agree with the valuable advice of the above posts. I started with crushed coral and later switched to a DSB (deep sand bed). Not only is it more asthetically pleasing, but it provides a higher quality biological filtraion that does not require vacuuming - as with CC.

    LR and fish or Coral??

I am new, as well, however, I believe that it is best to start with a FOWLR (Fish only with live rock). A reef system is much less forgiving for a beginner.

Suction Cups Suck! But Not Enough

I can relate!!! I finally scratched the inside of my suction cups with a fine grain sandpaper and then rinsed them thoroughly. It provided enough friction to make 'em stick!

Fish suggestions for 55 gallon tank

going back to your original list of fish, I wouldn't go with Tangs in a beginner 55 - from what I have learned, they require at least a 75 (I want a Tang, too!) Good to go with a Percula Clown, Dwarf Angle (Coral Beauty, Lemonpeel...semi-aggressive), Blenny, Goby, Basslet...
