    Placement of powerheads

try cleaning the spot on the aquarium just prior to putting the suction cup down on the surface. This seems to help keep mine in place. If I don't do this the cups loose suction in about 1/2 hour or so, but seem to stay on the freshly cleaned surface without any problem. Even if you don't see...

    A question about filters

just curious what is in your tank creating this kind of bioload that both HOB filters cannot handle. give us a list of what you have in the tank. I would agree with previous post that you should run the skimmer.

When should I do a water change?

water changes should be done to replace trace elements in the water. Anyone doing water changes to reduce nitrates is not fixing the problem. I would not add any more fish if you have an amonia reading in the tank. Definitely run the skimmer. Most people say you should do a monthly 10%- 20%...

    Copepods & Amphipods

the filter won't decrease the "bug" population in the tank but your tank size and LR amount is probably a little too low for a mandarin. some people will tell you that they eat other foods and some probably do but most of these fish will die a slow death in a 50 gal tank with 40lbs of live rock...

    how to clean hair algea

don't buy a tang to solve this problem. Answer some questions first. how long has your tank been set up? What are the water parameters (nitrite, ammonia, nitrate, PH, ALK, ect). If your set up is new then this is normal for a tank finishing it's cycle. What kind/size of clean up crew do you...

    Poll: coral fragging and propagating

sounds like a great idea especially for those of us new to corals. I have only been doing corals for 6 months now and have yet to find the courage to put the knife to a coral I work my butt off trying to keep healthy.

    Need a snail ID

they do look like an astrea without the shell. I'm not worried just curious as to what it is and what it's characteristics are.

    refugium?

your levels are fine so you don't need it but if your like everyone else you want another toy to tinker with. On the positive side your tangs will love feasting on the excess macro algea you grow in it.

    Need a snail ID

I noticed late last night a snail (I'm thinking it's a snail) without a shell moving accross the glass front of my tank. It's the second time I've seen him and both times were at night after lights out. I'ts about 1/2" long and simply looks like a snail with no shell. what is it? and is there a...

Need help on a couple questions..

yes you can put the halameda in your refugium. I don't believe any fish eat it as it has a tough calcerous skeleton. It's a good macro algea for filtering though. If you trim it back don't trim it too much as it's kind of finicky.

    cpr Aquafuge leaking

where exactly is it leaking from? if it doesn't leak when just holding water and leaks when the power head is engaged I would guess that the plastic tube running from the power head to the fuge is cracked. CPR has a website and message board for assistance.

    The Best Temp!

stability is what is important here. trying to keep it in the mid 70's is fine until summer when the room temp goes up and then you get a temp swing that stresses your fish. try to shoot for the easiest temp to maintain all year around with little or no change. Of course if you have deep pockets...

Biowheels are great: prove me wrong

I couldn't agree with you more. seems to me that all types of filtration convert nitrite/amonia to nitrates. look at live rock it does the exact same thing as a biowheel and does nothing to reduce nitrates yet no one considers live rock a "nitrate factory". Only the DSB converts the nitrates so...

    Pulsing xenia

I purchased a single stalk of pumping 40 days ago. It has now split into three stalks and is splitting again. I also noticed when it does this that the stalk goes from smooth to bumpy. Thats lots of reproduction in 40 days, now I know why they refer to this as a weed.

    sally lightfoot in a reef?

this same question has been asked many times and never answered. I would also like to know why they are sold with reef packages but not considered reef safe as I have one and have no problems. Hopefully one of the sharks will step up and explain why they are not reef safe and why they are being...

How long before refugium starts working?

have to agree with the previous post as it will take some time. You will need to prune or scrub the excess algae off the rocks/glass in your tank as just lowering the nitrates will not make it go away overnight. when I added my refugium I also took each rock out of the tank and scrubbed them in...

    Detrivore kit....

I have used inlandaquatics.com and can recomend their kits. The pricing you are seeing is what it is there are no better deals (other than getting some curing tank rubble from a friendly LFS)

    PC Lamp question

How much better (if at all) is the Actinic 03 vs the regular 7100k blue PC bulb. I currently have regular 7100k blue bulbs in my reef and want to know if the Actinic 03 is a much better bulb to be using.
