    bubble in overflow tube

I agree with dogstar, use a smaller diameter U-Tube or increase the flow and the air will push out of there. You want to match the U-Tube to the flow as closely as you can on the chance any air gets in there you want it to get pushed right out. Makes for a much safer design.

    glass, egg crate?

I've used a PAR meter on my tank and the egg crate does cut down on the light somewhat. I can't remember the amount but it was decently significant. It cuts down more so with MH lights as you get to the edge of their coverage area since the light is a point source. The light angle is much...

    Ocean Motions 8 way

"SCWD" = Switching Current Water Device sold at many online outlets and in lots of local fish stores. Somewhere around $40 and takes in 3/4 inch tubing and puts out 2 outlets of 3/4 inch. The velocity of the water moves gears that cause the flow to alternate between the two outlets.

3/4" drain tube through 1" bulkhead

When you use PVC Cement make sure you use the PVC primer also. Otherwise the joint won't be clean and could weaken or leak.

I heard Squidd is THE MAN

One other major thing I noticed is you need 1" supply lines. 1" will drain 600gph if I remember correctly, or just a bit more then your Mag 5. 1/2" drains are way too small and won't be able to keep up.

I heard Squidd is THE MAN

    1) You don't need tons of flow in a fuge, I do about 2X turnover per hour in my fuge and have live rock rubble where the water comes out that keeps it from disturbing the sand. I have also seen people place 90 degree or even a U at the bottom of the return to stop what you are worried about. 2)...

I heard Squidd is THE MAN

Oh, and I'm a big fan of putting Unions and ball valves all over the place. You'd be surprised how often something happens and you wish you had one somewhere else.

I heard Squidd is THE MAN

OK, here are my thoughts but I'm sure others will chime in as well. I don't see the need for the first baffle on the left, just let the water fall into the fuge directly. I think you need another baffle between the fuge and the return. Your return section will rise and fall with evaporation...

    PH Question

What do you have in your tank and what are your current Calcium and Alkalinity measurements (and PH, it would be good to know what your problem is, high/low/big swings)? If you haven't been dosing calcium and Alk right your PH will start to have problems. Need more info to give any help.

    glass, egg crate?

nope, egg crate is a lighting cover/diffuser. Basically a white plastic grid. You can find it in the lighting section of Home Depot or Loews. Comes in about a 4 foot by 2 foot panel and is easy to cut to any size using some wire cutters or something.

    coral banded shrimp

He will hide for awhile. Mine took a long time to even start to come out. For a long time he would only come out at feeding time, now he comes out all the time. Also when they molt they will stay hidden for some time. Try to look around for his tenticles you might spot him. I have a skunk...

    coral banded shrimp

The best answer is it depends on the personality of the CBS. Mine is afraid of the fish and won't go near them and doesn't bother anything else in the tank. He does a great job of cleaning up around the aquarium so I wouldn't want to be without him.

    Closed Loop Returns?

In a Closed loop the gravity pulling on the water entering the pump cancels out the gravity pulling on the water exiting the pump creating a theoretical zero head. That is why in a Closed Loop when the pump turns off the water doesn't flow in either direction. It won't be exact but you can...

    water pump ?

Are you pumping from a sump? With most pumps and headloss you should be fine although if the 700gph rating on your pump is with 4' of head you might be in trouble. At what head is that pump rated at? I like to put a ball valve in my return line no matter what. If the pump is fine you just...

    seaclone 100 skimmer??

I found that the Seaclone did not work well as a HOB skimmer. Too hard to set right always getting either microbubbles or no foam. When I installed a sump I used baffles to create a constant water level and put the skimmer in there up on some eggcrate and it started working very well. I get...
