    cc mixed with sand

Why is it so bad to mix CC with live sand? I have about 10# CC mixed in with about 40# sand. Is this not good? I have had no problems yet, but my tank has been up for only 2 mos.

    Anyone tried argocrete?

Yes, use portland cement. Call the people at garf and they will be able to tell you the specifics. From what I remember the cement can be found at certain types of art supply stores, but I am not sure. Call garf and they can tell you better. Hope this helps.

    Question about Bioload??

I would go for the bicolor blenny. We have one which we have affectionately called "Lenny the Blenny." (My wife named him-I had nothing to do with it!). Anyway, he is a really cool fish. At first he was really shy but now he loves to swim around with our clown, although he will go in to hiding...

    actinic lighting

But the actinic bulbs do count in that they give off radiation which inverts, etc. use for photosynthesis right? In other words, the bulbs aren't simply useless, are they? When you say that the actinic is for asthetic purposes only, you mean the color spectrum of the light, right? I hope my...

    actinic lighting

Is it absolutely necessary to have actinic lighting for your aquarium? What are the benefits of actinic lighting? I know the blue spectrum light penetrates the water better, but wouldn't pure 10K lighting be good enough?

    Start up help?

Welcome to the hobby. It is an incredible one (and addictive!!) For your first question, I would go with only live rock and no canister filter at all. If you can afford it, live rock will be your best bet. Your live rock will harbor all the necessary microbes you need to break down any wastes in...

    200 watt/gal with Power Compacts?

Eddie! You're a genius. Well, you at least said what I was wanting to hear. I just bought a PC unit and was hoping that it was a good choice. Thanks for the info. I am getting an All-Glass 2X55 unit with straight pin bulbs. Any suggestions on which bulbs (brand) to get? E-mail me at...

    jonthefb-question about PC lighting

Jon- Quick question. I saw your post in the other thread about PC lighting. I didn't want to steal the post, so I thought I would ask you in another! As far as the difference goes between PC's and VHO's, what is the difference? I have talked with someone who said they had PC lighting but when...

    200 watt/gal with Power Compacts?

I have had the exact same question. From what I can gather, there are some that love PC's and there are some that don't. The ones that don't say that they have tried PC's and they didn't work well for their corals and when they put on VHO's their corals perked right up. But, there is really no...

    hot ballast

Yes, it is pretty heavy. Are the old ballasts the magnetic ones? Are the newer ballasts electronic? I assume the newer ones are a little bit cooler! I feel much better now. I don't know exactly what I will do, maybe put a small fan on it. I know I need to suspend it somehow so it doesn't come in...

    hot ballast

I bought a used 30gal tank and it came with a 36" strip light. The ballast is for a 40 Watt lamp. The ballast gets REALLY hot, so hot I hardly can touch it. Is this bad? Could it potentially be a fire hazard? I am new at this game and know nothing about ballasts.

    What next?

The funniest thing is that my clown has eaten a TON of pods already. I thought he would only eat prepared foods. I used to see critters all over the rocks, now I hardly see any.

    What next?

I am on my way to the LFS tomorrow to buy another fish. I have a 30gal and right now I only have an ocellaris clown in there. What fish should I get next? I am thinking about a 6 Line Wrasse. The only concern I have is that it may decrease my population of critters. Should this be a concern? Any...

    All-Glass High Output Compact Strip-lite

Is the bulb on there just like a 10K bulb? What I was thinking was leaving one of theirs in and then using a pure actinic bulb for the other. So you like it? I am thinking about buying a used one. Thanks for the input.

    All-Glass High Output Compact Strip-lite

Anyone use one of these? I am probably going to buy one and just wanted to see if they work well. I am looking at buying a 2X55.
