My tomato clown made his home in my goniopora. It never retracts and he doesn't burrow or rub it to death like my other clown does his anemone. So far so good.

Damsels are also aggressive, even though clowns are in the damsel family, they could still be getting harrassed. If you haven't seen it, it could be going on in the evening when you're asleep. This stress combined with that of a new home could cause it to expire.

When I feed my corals and anemones with a skewer, my clowns try to rip the food off whether they've been fed or not, so I quickly move around in circles making the clown chase it down. Anyway I think a skewer works great and it keeps your hands out of the water.
