    what can('t) a 4 inch lion eat

I was planning on a community aquarium, however I have recently become fascinated with lionfish. I am debating having a lionfish, I was planning on a clown, a sixline, a small goby, and a Grammatidae. It strikes me that any of these would become fish food to a 4 inch lion. Is this correct...

    Minimum Impact Tank

Has anyone made a minimal impact tank? I'm wondering how limiting it would be. Anyways if you've done it I'd love to hear about how it went for you, and everybody loves pictures. This is spawned from seeing this article. I'm thinking one could use artificial rocks or just dry rock. There...

    Effective tank size

So just looking at various tanks I have started to wonder about how much space various fish need. For example commonly cited on this board is tangs need 6 feet of length to be happy and healthy. How would a tang do in a tank that was 5 foot by 5 foot? Or 4' x 4'? 4' x 4' x 25" is 240...

the non scientificness of cycling a tank

I just wanted to complain about my tank cycling, it's been going since july 11, and the ammonia has never read anything other than 0.25. But on the bright side I'm a total pro at growing algae.

hermit crab not happy? large hermits?

Just added a clean up crew. One of the hermit crabs seems to constantly switch shells looking for a larger shell. Is this a big deal? I don't think there are any larger shells for it. I guess I can come up with a larger shell soon. Also are there any types of hermit crabs that are slightly...

    Introduction to mixed reef tanks

I was planning on a possible mixed reef tank, however I recently came across in a book a statement reading more or less that hard and soft corals are very difficult to keep in the same tank. Is there some sort of tutorial post on keeping a mixed hard/soft tank. Or maybe a good book someone can...

Sleeper banded bullet =? dragon goby

Is a sleeper banded bullet in fact the same thing as a dragon goby. I am very confused about this species and have heard that it is a sand sifter and that it is not a sand sifter. Also that it is very difficult to keep, and very easy to keep. I'm so confused, does anyone have this species in...

    whitish gel on fish flesh

I'm using a piece of fish flesh with my cycle, anyhow it has a whitish looking gel all over it. Does anyone know what this is? Is it good or bad? Need to do water testing again tonight.

    Dual Photoperiod?

Can I split my photoperiod across 2 segments in the day? I'd like to do lights on maybe 7-9 and then again 4-10, for 8 hours a day. Right now all my tank has is live rock and algae. Will this be ok when I eventually have fish/corals. Would it be better if I did 4/8/4/8 or 6/6/6/6...

My first tank (warning large download)

I just thought I'd share some photos of my first tank, they appear quite bluish, despite the tank looking quite white in reality. This is my first go at the saltwater thing. The tank is 30 gallons, has a 300 gph powerhead pointing right at the heater to distribute heat equally throughout the...

30 gallon stock list request for comments

Planning ahead a little I'd like to come up with a stock list for my 30 gallon tank. It may have close to 40 gallon volume with a small tank for a sump (possibly also refugium). At first it would be fish only with live rock, with the possibility of adding corals later. The central species are...

    Super Fine Sand Clouding Water

So I shaped my base rock and decided the debris would be good pH buffer and other things like that, so I added it to the tank. The tank is now a cloudy mess, as the debris was superfine sand. I don't know what to do to remove the sand from the water column, I was thinking attach a power filter...

    eggcrate on bottom of tank

Someone recommended putting eggcrate on the bottom of a tank to spread out the stress of the rock and make it more stable. I worry that this will make it harder for critters that sift sand. Is this a legitimate worry? Have you put anything besides sand and rock in the bottom of your tank?

    (dis)advantages of a bio wheel

I have had a very reliable shop tell me that I do not need a bio wheel filter if using live rock and live sand to filter. However, my question is what are the disadvantages to using such a filter? For that matter what are the benefits?

    barnacles? limpets?

Does anyone keep barnacles in saltwater aquariums? How about limpets? Are these easy to keep? Barnacles have the most fascinating skeletons. I believe even if I cannot keep them I will put an empty shell cluster in my tank.

    beginners sump/overflow question

Do people get their aquariums drilled if they wish to do a sump? Or do people buy the pre-drilled variety? It is necessary to have a hole in the aquarium below the level at which you wish to maintain the water, correct?

    substrate/live sand question

I plan on having a live sand bed, however I would like to choose the color of the sand/substrate. So I have a few questions. First is black sand/substrate ok? It seems rather unnatural and I'm hesitant to not loyally reproduce a natural habitat, but clearly I like the way it looks...
