    Help Me!!!!!! Urgent!!!

Sorry, Just saw your other thread. Looks like most of the creatures made it OK. Might mave been a bacterial problem caused by the addition of the live rock. John

    Help Me!!!!!! Urgent!!!

It is probably NOT oodinium. From the description I would guess either lymphocystis or cryptocaryon ( ick ). If I had to put money on it, I would say cryptocaryon. Oodinium is almost imperceptable to the human eye. Usually the fish are dead before you can see it. Are the fish behaving...

    copper and nitrite

FYI Beth, Nitrites are almost non-toxic at NSW salinity levels. So if his nitrites are high.........who cares? Also..........I have used both hyposalinity and cupramine treatments and found BOTH to have a minimal effect on the nitrogen cycle. Copper CAN slow down the cycle of a new system, but...

    C. irritans life cycle and hypo

I commend you for your forward looking thoughts. Two big problems I see............ #1 Convincing the wholesaler to seperate your stock from every one elses stock........This would be an almost impossible task. #2 Convincing the lousy LFS to to the same. These guys (as well as the...

    Marine Velvet

How do you know it's velvet? How long has the fish been symptomatic? How many fish total in what size tank? John

" would be willing to bet that the nitrate buildup killed them" Based on what????????????????? Can you show me ANY evidence that high nitrates are toxic to snails? John

    getting VERY DISCOURAGED SW

My suggestion would be to remove all inverts from the tank (if you have any) This way you can add new fish and use hyposalinity to cure ick as you add them. Remember...................no inverts (crabs, snails, coral, live rock) I only suggest this because it sounds like you may have a fish only...

BAD DAY My powder Blue just died

" This fish looked awsome. Very Vibrent." Could be a sign of cyanide poisoning. Often drug caught fish are the most vibrant fish, and die 2-3 weeks post capture for no apparent reason. John

    Mantis Shrimp Finally Captured

    Beth, Terry please read !!!

What we need is this: Find someone with a tank that fits the following criteria: 1. Has had a cryptocaryon outbreak in the past. 2. Fish got better on their own. 3. Has not experienced more outbreaks or seen any spots in at least 1 year. 4. Has not added any livestock at all during this...

    HQI or Standard ballast?

They don't make a double ended 400 watt Radium so you have no choice but the single ended. Single ended bulbs are every bit as good as double ended, Richard Harker put that to bed finally in last months Advanced Aquarist Magazine. One more thing to consider: The 400 watt electronic ballast...

Do Mantis Shrimp Traps Work? I think I may need one...

The most common mantis hitchhickers are smasher type mantis. These usually get no bigger than 3 inches in length. They do not kill fish but do like to eat small snails and crabs. I have at least one of these in my large reef tank. I really don't worry too much about him as my fish are safe ( I...

    46 reef setup ideas?

I would not use the glass cover at all. You will need the evaporation for cooling. You must not have liked my suggestion on wattage and type of lamp as I was very specific. The 400 watt Sunburst I am using works very well on my 46 but if I were to do it again I would use the Radium. John

    46 reef setup ideas?

If you want an anemone you need more light. I would ditch the PCs and get a single 400 watt Radium bulb on a PFO HQI ballast. This will give you enough light for the anemone and anything else you want to keep. I run a 400 watt over my 46 bowfront. Mine is just a coral Q-tank though, not a full...

    mandrin goby is real hungry

You might try a product called Cyclop-ezze by Argent. It is freeze dried copepods from a salt water lake in Canada. My shrimpfish eat it eagerly and they are considered copepod and live food specialists only as are most mandarins. The nutritionl profile of the cylop-ezze is fantastic. Probably...

    hyposalinity in main tank?

Bacteria will not die. The nitrogen cycle bacteria will adjust just fine to the hyposalinity. You may see a slight tick up in nitrite but nitrite is not very toxic in saltwater, even in 1/2 strength saltwater. John

    hyposalinity in main tank?

Yes, you can do hyposalinity in the main tank if you have no inverts. Since you have a huma-huma my guess is that tank is invert free ;) I would remove the copper first using carbon for a day or so before I lowered the salinity. Copper and hyposalinity can be used together but it is very tricky...

what does my powder blue have?

Beth, I see where you were coming from. I don't have too much to add except to say that the only time I have ever seen HLLE is in my Q-tank. My Desjardin tang had a mild case develop in quarantine. It resolved itself within 1 week once he was added to the reef tank. I have no visable microalgae...

what does my powder blue have?

"Seaweed is what tangs need to eat" On what do you base this statement? Most Acanthurus graze on algae turfs. The compostition of these turfs is mostly microalgae and diatoms. Very little macroalgae is found within algal turfs. Certain tangs like the Naso sp. graze heavily on macroalgae, but a...
