Yeah I remember that thread... http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1868825&page=3
It's a really nice look. I'm just not sure that I would be able to pull it off with my tank being drilled on the back because of all of the plumbing. Otherwise I'd love to make something like that.

Sticking out of the back like a sore thumb lol. Pluss the return line will be run up that back in the center. If I did the rock wall idea on each side of the tank where the overflows are it might be possible to do a small box that fit inbetween the drain lines if I can work around the return line somehow. I'll have to give it some more thought. It might be doable.

Hmmmmm well............. lets see here...... you could do a small one in the middle and maybe do the return in the clear plastic? The folks who do those nature aquariums use clear tubing throughout so the viewer can not see the plumbing.
Don't know.... i will have to look more at it.

What are you doing for PH or circulation in the tank?
Not a 100% sure yet, Al. Hydor is coming out with a new wavemaker called the smartwave for their evo pumps that is going to be around the $80 range. It's supposed to be coming out in June. I may just go with that in the beginning to get things rolling. Possibly upgrade to tunze or vortech down the line. http://reefbuilders.com/2011/03/04/koralia-smartwave-hydor/

It's an idea. I'm thinking whatever i do that somehow the returns are still going to stick out like a sore thumb. We'll see how it goes. Eventually I'm going to break down my 50g system and build another tank from the ground up, possibly a cube style. Maybe I'll encorporate the idea into that one since I'd be drilling that tank on the bottom.

I feel your pain. Stuff like that always happens to me.
I know, right? Ever feel like something just wasn't meant to be? This is the second time the door has taken a 6ft tumble. Ontop of some other problems that I've had with it. ARRRRGH!!

I agree w/ meo, what happened?

And I am sure "why me" wasn't what you said when it happened.
Same thing as before, I had it held up there with some tape, accept I used about 8 pieces this time instead of just 1 piece. I guess the humitidy in the garage just cause the tape to let go. You'd think I would have learned my lesson after the last time but I guess not. Unfortunately the rules of this site won't allow me to repeat what I said when I seen the destruction.

LOL...yeah...probably screamed OUT OMG I'M HAVING A MEOWZER KINDA DAY

lol...it does feel a little bit like a Meozer kind day. I also came home to find my purple fire fish dead. He always hides out in the rocks untill feeding time. I never knew anything was wrong with it. Come to think about it, I remember seeing it alive lastnight but I don't remember it coming out to eat. WHY?

Well, the good news is that the door is fixable. I wasn't sure at first because I had glued the heck out of the crown molding and even added support pieces behind it for further strength that I glued the heck out of as well. Fortunately I was able to chisle everything off without ruining the door. But now I have a dilema.
A while back I made some modifications to the door because I decided to try some different hinges. Well the hinges didn't work they way that I had wanted them to in part because of how the framework on my canopy is made and where the hinges had to attach to. To make a long story short, once the modifications were made I realized I would only ever be able to open the door 90 degrees. This meant that any serious cleaning/maintanance that needed to be done to the tank would have been a pain in the butt to have to lean in and do what I had to do while being crouched over on a ladder without taking the door completely off (which is kind of a pain). I had to hold the door with one hand and unscrew the hinges with the other and not let the door fall. And since I modified the door I couldn't change it back to my origional idea of using a piano hinge that allowed me to open the door all the way up to like 190 degrees and it stayed up on it's own without any addition hardware.
So what would you guys do if you were me?
A.) Spend $35 for a new piece of crown molding and just have to re-stain that one piece and keep the door that I wasn't totally happy with but could live with.
B.) Spend about $100 for all new materials and make the door again the way that I was much happier with and go through all of the extra work of cutting, trimming and restaining?
Anybody wanna buy a used canopy door?

I vote for option B because you have come so far and it should be completely what you want. I know if I did option A, that I would get angry at the door for not being functional and break it into pieces. After that, I would consider some anger management courses.

anger management? Chu pls........ drink a beer stare at it foe about 30 min. and then go ape @$#%^ all over it!!
no kidding...... thats an easy fix with some gorilla glue and a few clamps and some more beer. Don't let this kick you in the butt bud!!

Thanks guys, I'm really thinking about remaking it. It's something that I went back in forth in my head over for quite a few months before I got impatient and just said screw it and kept it the way it was. Had it been fixable with just some glue and clamps I probably would have done that but unfortunately some parts of it had splintered pretty bad and it would have looked like crap. Oh well, no biggie. I'll be happier with it in the long run. Guess I'll be making a trip to lowes tonight.

I think its a sign that your stand didnt like the door either..... if your stand is alive that is.........
I would go with option B also cause this is something that should last longer than your tank if taken care of. You just as well have it the way you like instead of having problems with it for a long time.

That made me cringe when i saw the broken door. Crappy.
I would go with option B as well. Might as well have it the way you want it. I know that would get annoying to have to do maintenance on the tank that way. Plus you might end up having the same thing happen and have the door fall again.
That stand looks amazing BTW. I can't wait to see it in the house.
