Ok let’s talk about your Cortez ray. All of this is common knowledge and I know you did your homework but lets revue. If you are going to get a ray the Cortez is an excellent choice. And they are known to get to close to a foot in length when they reach maturity. Their popularity has allowed the hobbyist to get a fairly good idea on their growth rate. Approximately 1 inch in width and 2 inches in total length per year. They can live for up to 8 years. Your tank size if not a problem. They eat worms and crustaceans. How are you feeding him and how long have you have him? They are also known to eat fish. Now for the bad news. They need a lot of swimming area. No matter whom you talk to the consensus is the same on that point. Alto they are not know to eat corals, the ray itself can become injured by swimming into stinging corals. From my own observations here in Florida Keys they like to lie on or just under a sandy bottom. (The reason every one on the west coast of Florida learns the STING RAY SHUFFEL.)
With that said your rockwork would have to be in compliance with the swimming, hunting and resting habits of the ray. If you meet those requirements IMO they are a great and fascinating addition to any tank.
