ok everyone i pulled out a bunch of algae out today and hopefully my CUC can clean up the rest. i took the parameterrs of my QT to find out that the ammonia is decreasing and the nitrite is increasing. yayyy, one step closer to getting clownfish. hopefully i can get my first fish in 2 weeks!!!!

Ok so sorry havent posted anything in a couple of days. i have been pulling out algae in the tank every day, but it just seems to keep growing!!! but i ordered 3 months worth of carbon yesterday and hopefully it will get here this weekend. but anyways on of my peps came out onto the sand and started cleaning it so i had to get some pics. oh also i noticed that one of my peps has molted, is this good or bad, should i just leave it in there or try to fish it out. oh is also got a FTS and a pic of one of my hermits.

Okay up about a month now. Time to get down to it. IMO you need to be aggressive the the hair algae outbreak you are experiencing. Manual removal (should never have hair algae growing on your magfloat). I do mean aggressive manual removal. get as much as you can out of there if it takes you a couple of hours to do so. Increase your water changes and filter material changes to every three days or so. If you have a skimmer run it wet and empty the collection cup often. You must get the nutrient that is there from the die off on your rocks out of the tank. I did not read back through the whole thread but if you are using tap water stop it now. Get some RODI from you LFS or distilled from the grocery store.
You must be diligent now, let me say that again, you must be diligent now or this problem (which I believe is on the verge of getting away from you) will be a continuing escalating problem.
Please take this for what it is a warning of dire consequenses to come if you do not get on top of it now. I have seen many threads that the poster has gotten so fed up with hair algae that they have either quit or taken the tank down, cooked the rock and started over and I would hate to see you end up there.

ok thanks for the info. i am trying my hardest to get as much of the algae out. everyday i spend at least an hour working on the algae. the rock is starting to decrease in algae but the sand just keeps growing. i am going to try to find some turbos to put in there my LFS only gets them rarely.

Okay if you are doing that daily that is a good thing.
You need to clean the glass too if you aren't and get that stuff suspended in the water column for removal by your filtration. Speaking of filtration I would take that sponge out of there and get yourself some polyester fiber fil material from Michaels or WalMart. Make sure it does not have anything sprayed on it just plain poly fiber.
Put some of this in and change it every day. You will see how much gunk it is taking out. How are you doing with water changes?
And remember any critter you add now, like snails or hermits, will increase your bio-load and give the algae more nutrient to grow with. I am not saying don't add anything just saying that adding them will not take away the need for you to personally and up close be aggressive with this. If I were to add anything at this point it would be 4 or 5 blue legged Caribbean hermit crabs and see how that went for a while.
Catcfishcity you need warp speed now!!!

ok thanks spanks you have been a LOT of help. i think i may try that polyester fiber idea, it sounds pretty good. and the only thing that i plan on adding before i get my fish(in the tank hopefully in about 1 month) will be a couple more hermits, some nass snails, and 1 emerald crab. and my carbon is coming on tuesday so that is when i am going to replace it.

Shouldnt be a mess? If GSP is the only coral u have in ur tank leave the lots out the whole time? Heck any softies u have will be okay 2 days with no light IMO that way u know nothing goes wrong.
And if u get Nass snails they wont touch the hiar algea. thyll just keep ur sand stireed up. Get a tubro and a Margartia

ok well i have someone doin the lights so that should be no problem. and i got 3 turbos already and they arent touching the sand at all.

Agree with reb here on the lights. However if you can get a couple of Nassarius snails they are carnivores and while they are in your sand they will also eay any meaty stuff located in there. This will help with the nutrient level.
