Interesting observations on starting a tank

sounds like you're on your way! Don't discount silica or crushed limestone sand. it works - maybe not quite as well as aragonite - but it's not the big huge mess that some people play it out to be.

    nano lighting

really depends on what types of corals you're putting in that reef. If it's SPS - yes. Most softies and LPS should be okay with what's on there though...

    Water movement

It really depends on a few things: How much rock do you have - and how well are you able to pinpoint flow in and around that rock with your current setup. What corals do you have (or are planning to have)?

This guy bit me the other day

Nice! That's an ocellaris' handywork? I've been "bitten" by: Naso Tang LMB Ocellaris Purple Tang Chromis None of which hurt - but all of which I wasn't expecting..

    Nano Build-Off question.

Yeah - I'm rethinking the overall design completely. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to keep the rocks in place with that much flow...

    Seeing Purple

water perameters play a part too. I found with my old setup running Instant Ocean, 1 color became predominant in the MH area and another in the shaded area. With the SAME rock, in a new tank and another salt brand (this one higher in Calcium and Magnesium) and a pretty frequent strontium...

    best fish to eat algae?

Get a sea hare. A 10 gallon tank isn't really big enough for most of the other recommendations.

    would it hurt anything if....

Heres the problem. You scrape the huge amounts of corallineon the back glass - within a week - it's basically covered the other 3 pieces of glass - so you're now scraping the front and sides. For that reason, I just let it go.

Yardright Play Sand If anyone Needs It...

strange. I've shipped probably 300 priority mail shipments of sand from SC without issue. And received about another 200. then again - I've never been asked what's in the package... :)

    Watts Per Gallon?

DE bulbs have a piece of glass covering the bulb - the SE bulbs have a built in glass cover. You're right - that they "could" burst. However, I ran my bulbs (as stated) for about 3 years without a cracked bulb. They got dirty quick - and the occasional sizzle from the water splashing, but I...

    Watts Per Gallon?

For what it's worth - i had a 'modern series' canopy. I assume that's the kind you have. I ran 175W SE MH retrofit. The actual distance from the water was less than 3". Didn't overheat - I did run a pair of 65 CFM fans and I keep my AC at 74. You can also enlarge the canopy - I did it when...

    Watts Per Gallon?

the height of the fixure isn't as important as the actual distance of the bulb from the water. The taller fixture might just have a deeper reflector, and not be closer. a 5" clearance canopy is gonna be really tough.

    Lighting types

    I don't get it. You say you have 4 65w dual PC's - and describe your 8 bulbs.... Then you say you have 260 watts... 8 * 65 = 520

    tank wont clear.....

pads? Are you running powerfilters? What I meant by carbon filtration was to use some carbon in a high flow area to strip some of the stuff in the water that's making it cloudy. You'd be suprised how polished water can look.

    Live Rock Question

In my opinion, Fiji is a low grade rock. Never heard of that particular type of rock - but you can look up the name on google and see it's a pretty popular divesite. It's all really up to you looking at the rock itself. You ask us if it's good - take a look and let us know :)
