    Coral ID

yeah - tough call... I wouldn't say it was a shroom.. But I could be wrong. I guess diatoms that are holding tight... :)

    Filtration (kinda long)

You mean a Rio 3100? Yes - take the bioballs out gradually. Sorry - didn't see the powerheads.

    Nano Build-Off question.

Ah - I see. How do you drill slots? :) I assume a tiny pilot hole and a hand saw?

    powerhead sucking up small fish?

are you using the grate designed for an undergravel filter? IE: it's really long and gets thinner on the end and has a very small inlet with a grate? Or are you using the shorter "all grate" one? Wish I could find a picture online to explain the difference. One creates a small area with lots...

    How much for liverock?

depends where you go. I've paid 9.99 for Marshall Islands stuff - REALLY nice... I've seen fiji "premium" (with free aptasia!!) for as much as $15 a pound... Just ordered some Marshall Island rock online for $3.99 a pound. Seems like that's a pretty good price.

    live and/rock question

ace - the short answer to how much livesand and rock would you have to have is none. You don't HAVE to have any - especially if you're using a wetdry filtration system. Personally, I'd use the 55 (or 30) gallon tank as a sump, and use NO wetdry. Use a good amount of rock (depends on what type...

    Corals and Bioload?????

Alveos are very difficult to keep long term. Gonioporas are near impossible to keep long term. That's the basic difference. Corals to not bother with: Goniopora Alveopora Elegance Any non-photosynthetic leather (chilli, cauliflower, etc) Any non-photosynthetic Gorgonian. Can you be successful...

    Transporting a 10-gallon

I transported a 90 gallon 3 hours with zero casualties... So I'm pretty sure a 10 gallon would be okay... Key is having some fresh water to use. Mix up a batch of 10 gallons to bring with you. Get everything back in the tank and do a 50% waterchange. Then let it sit for a few hours and...

    Refractometer verse Hydrometer

Paid $30 for mine. I made the decision to replace my hydrometer when a good friend showed up with his. My hydrometer at 1.026 was actually closer to 1.032.... My tank was the Red Sea!

    Filtration (kinda long)

yeah - what he said... Take out those bioballs and get your circulation going. An algae outbreak with a lighting change is pretty normal. How you react to it is the key. Cutting back the lighting hours initially is a good way to ease the tank into the new powerful lights. I don't see any...

    Coral ID

are you referring to the brownish areas? If so - it looks to be diatoms... a natural part of any new tank. If you have a turkey baster, you can blow them off the rocks. If it doesn't blow off - come back and let us know...

Gettin geared up for nano cube. Need your opinion!

couple things. tuningvis - you mentioned salinity of 30 (which is low) - I assume that's a typo and you meant 35, either that or you meant specific gravity of 1.030 (which is high). Reef Crystals is a salt brand - not some magical crystal that cures your saltwater woes... It's in no way a scam...

    cost for nano

I think the important thing to remember is all the little odds and ends that don't get factored into many of the nano equations that you hear about. IE: if these guys have an esisting tank, things like RODI units, Refractometers, test kits, magnet scrapers, etc are all things that they can just...

    Nano Build-Off question.

Anyone see these things. There's one on RDO and someone started one on my site, that I'm actually going to participate in... Hey $100 aint bad :) So the question is: I'm setting up a 2 gallon nano and I"m going to run a 10 gallon sump with a mag7 in there.. I know, I know - that's a LOT of...

    Good information

welcome. There are lots of places to learn. The important thing is that you've made the choice to learn. I do disagree about the "no stupid questions" statement though. :) There are plenty of uneducated questions that are not stupid, but there are a good many stupid ones too...

Finally! 8 weeks in, tank in its last stage of cycling -water change?-

Assuming all traces of ammonia and nitrites are gone - I would do a 5-10 gallon water change and get yourself a hearty fish! :) Think damsel/chromis/clown/pseudochromis Let him/her hang out for a week or so before you get another. As far as test kits, you seem to have the list relatively...

    QT Question

I've never QT'd my fish. I think your best bet is to find a good quality LFS that is willing to order fish for you at a reasonable price. My LFS keeps all of their fish in copper tanks and in the past has held onto fish for a week or more for me. Only in the past when I ordered online from...

Ammonia/nitrite Up? Trying Not To Freak...please Help

water changes are the best way to reduce your ammonia and nitrite levels. I would suggest you go buy a bucket of salt and grab some RO water from your supermarket until your unit arrives in the mail. Change enough water that your ammonia and nitrite levels become almost non-existent. And wait...
