Just some basic questions for the beginner

generally speaking you should not put corals into a new tank. Live rock is almost a must have. You should start out with the live rock and live sand and get the tank cycled. Before you do anything - make sure you have the basics: test kits, lighting, powerhead(s), good filtration just to name...

    How to lower nitrates?

what size tank are we talking about here? The 20 nitrate is not bad - it is a bit stressful on inverts - but not bad for the fish. Nitrates at high levels will kill inverts - fish on the other hand are simply stressed out and made more susceptible to other problems by this. If you have a larger...

two to three days is pretty typical with these - so I agree with the other posters

    Green Star Placement

if this is a new addition to your tank you should start it out lower and then move it up in the tank - it should be fine at the level you stated.

    Frogspawn question??

you may have been having an issue with the lighting intensity - if it came from lower lighting then high lighting will shock it - thus when you placed it lower in your tank it was not under such stress. Frogspawn typically enjoys medium light and low to medium flow.

    When to split??

this can be done pretty much at any time of your choosing as long as they are not in a healing or stressed condition. The plugs are simply a temporary mounting for them although some will simply mount the entire plug and let the corals grow over them. this will not likely happen with frogspawn...

    Something is Seriously Wrong

Give a run down of the parameters and the inhabitants in the tank - that will be a place to start for someone to perhaps pinpoint your problem. Also type of lighting and how long these corals have been in the system. If you could post some pics that would help too.

    Lighting regiment.

You could order a time clock that has DPST switching with one normally open and one normally closed switch - wire that to an outlet into which you plug the lights (or you can hardwire into a box). These time clocks are made by Intermatic, Tork and several mfg's. By having the opposing switching...

    What Are These???

As an addendum to the last - some corals with long tentacles will more likely not be safe with the pep's - I did have problems with them nipping tentacles pff of the yellow star zoas but they did not bother the palys or other zoas in the tank - I think the yellows just looked like aptasia to them.

    What Are These???

Yes - the pep's are reef safe with rare exceptions. I bought mine from SWF some time ago and even though they were small they just kept picking away at the one big aptasia I had and finally wiped it out - they first took out it's feeder tentacles and it began to starve and shrink. The small apts...

    What Are These???

The copperband butterfly eats them - I personally used peppermint shrimp with great success. The peppermints will continue to be scavengers and become part of your clean up crew when all the aptasia is gone.

    Now what...

Hey Mudbone You've got the basics there but you really need to slow down and take head of a couple of things already mentioned. The yellow tang is not suitable for that size tank - it is recomended for a minimum 125ga tank - it will outgrow that tank pretty quickly. I second the comments re...
