this is long.... but please read i need help!!! shrimp keep dying....

    1. Has the tank ever been treated with copper? I'd suspect your CC star and anemone might not have lived this long if copper was the culprit, but it's worth asking. 2. The low-but-readable ammonia is a problem. Ammonia should always read 0 - if you're able to detect any at all, I'd be looking...

    PH problems

I'd be more concerned about the ich and copper than the low pH. 7.4 is pretty low, but if you're stable at 7.8 now, that's high enough as long as you don't get large swings. Are you testing at the same time every day? PH tends to drop overnight and rise during the day due to photosynthesis by...

    finally made up my mind!

That's a pretty large fish list for a 55 IMHO. At full size that many will be pushing the biofilter pretty close to its limit...if you do stock all those, I'd be very careful to do it slowly and monitor levels carefully.

    Bad snail?

Umm, I'd have to ask why you bought a snail without knowing if it was harmful or not...

    New Live Rock.

It really depends on the size of the tank. If it's a small tank, yes you should cure it. If it's, say, 100g, I'm not 100% sure I'd bother. You'll get some die-off if it was shipped, but it may not be enough to cause a spike in a large system.

It's the rare but dreaded Caulerpa cannibalis, the man-eating macro of Wannahawkaloogie Atoll! Flee for your life! :D

    Please Help with Cleaner Shrimp!!!!

I might have to rethink the temp in our main tank then. I've tried to keep it stable at 78, but we have 3 skunk cleaners. Maybe I should keep it at 80 instead. Is there any truth to what I've heard that cyanobacteria grows faster at higher temps? I've fought an on-again-off-again battle with...

    baby starfish - beneficial?

The microstars are harmless, probably even beneficial as they will help maintain a healthy sandbed. The sand-sifting star, OTOH, will deplete the sandbed of all the beneficial animals it hosts. I'd remove it.

white fuzzy tube-like growth on liverock

Do they have kind of a little pineapple shape, with a small "crown?" Sounds like Q-tip sponges to me. Harmless and kinda cool imho.

    Please Help with Cleaner Shrimp!!!!

78 is too cold for most cleaners? Really? I've never run across that tidbit before, Bang. What's a more appropriate temp?

Closed loop over back of tank?

I'd like to add a closed loop to my 100g, probably with a SCWD and two returns to get some variation in the flow. Problem is, the tank isn't drilled. Is it feasible to do this by plumbing over the back of the tank? That adds a lot of bends to the required plumbing.

    Foxface respiration rate?

Not finding any answers through searching, so I'll put the question out there. My newish (about 2.5 weeks) foxface has been breathing faster than everybody else ever since I got it. Its behavior is what I'd call normal (a little skittish but not overly so...is much more at ease than it was in...

    Urgent: Peppermints attacking new anemone

I've just decided to leave peppermints out of that tank :) I never really saw them during the day anyway, so I'm going to trade them away to a better home.

    Urgent: Peppermints attacking new anemone

My superior (to a small crustacean, anyway) intellect finally prevailed. I managed to trap two of the three offenders with a piece of shrimp in a glass ale mug laid horizontally on the sandbed. Both have been banished to the sump :) The third hasn't shown in over an hour, despite the anemone...

    Urgent: Peppermints attacking new anemone

I just put a flower anemone in the 100g tank tonight...it's my first anemone and I didn't expect what happened next. Literally as soon as it was in the tank, before I even had it settled on a rock shelf, my three peppermint shrimp were all over it. They keep picking at its tentacle area, even...

    RBTA care

No worries there - I will not buy a wild-caught anemone. There's no reason to take one out of the wild. I think I can get an aquacultured one from our local club members without much trouble, as there was a group order not too long ago with the intention of establishing a stable base for the...

    RBTA care

Having upgraded to MH lighting in our 100g, I'm considering trying to keep a RBTA. I'd like to get a better lock on their care requirements before I risk an animals' health, however. What specifically are the crucial water parameters for anemones? Nitrates in this tank tend to hover around 15...

    Clown Hosting Question

I've got a small frogspawn in my Nanocube (bought it as an established tank with the frog already in) and haven't observed any problems at all. The only other LPS in the tank is a candy cane that looks good when it hasn't been knocked over recently. The shrooms and zoos right next to the frog...

Any bad experiences with Flatworm Exit?

I just discovered we've got a red flatworm infestation in our display tank. I'm weighing natural control (wrasses or nudis) vs. chemical warfare and not sure yet how I'm going to go about it. So I've got a question. Has anyone here had a bad experience with Flatworm Exit? Most of my...
