Anyone ever tear down and redo a large tank?

Hey I have had my 210 up and running for 15 months. Every thing is going good, but occasionally I get some discoloring of my sand bed. I also have a six foot near verticle wall of live rock. I am thinking of a very long day overhual where I remove everything except the sand bed. Then sift...

    equipment questions

I also love my Coral life Super Skimmer (220 gal model). If you test for phospates and get measurable readings, yes you want to get it down, but you also want to know where it's coming from. So think about a refugium area with macro algae like chaeto.

What Do You Think Of My Bargain 180 Setup?

Fantastic deal! My 210 was a complete set, was still running the day I bought it. Mine was $2700.00 complete with some livestock and corals. So yes I would say you got quite the deal! With those lights I can tell ya you will need a chiller!

    algae problem

With cyano think flow flow flow! Your mag 9 is rated around 1500 gph i think. Your two corner over flows are rated around 600 gph each. input / output are close, so instead of adding pumps in your sump you need to think about a closed loop system for increased flow. Or just adding a couple...

    carpet anemone

Most carpets get fed before shipping (if they eat they are usually healthy) and yes you see crap! Animal has one oriface for both eating and excreting. Carpets seem to eat more than other anemones so get him started with regular feedings. Good luck. I would get him into the larger tank soon...

    MH Bulbs?

Can't say for sure! Yet I can tell you I have used Ushio / XM / and cheap knock offs like the sale ones you described. XM 10,000K 250 watt have the light I like the best (asthetically). Yet 2 out of 4 bulbs burned out within a week. They replaced them but it was a pain. The cheap bulbs I...

    looking for a good powerhead

Powerheads - Maxijets have worked great for me for years! In saltwater systems though you need to do a little more maintainance on them. Every couple of months take them apart and clean them and remove calcium build up on all internal surfaces. If you run them on on/off switches or timers they...

    Do U Gfci????

My entire system is on 4 outlets. All of them GFI. The power has gone out and come back on without throwing them. However the electrician who connected the system for me suggested running two new breakers; one 20 for most ecetrical and a dedicated 30 for the lighting and return pumps. So far...

    hobby magazines

I had subcribed to TFH magazine for years but when I switched to salt the magazine only ever had 3 articles per issue on salt. I was just in a larger metro area and found Reef Keepers Magazine. Articles on plenums, sand beds, lighting, and more. Its the first I have seen it but I like it.

    Alkalinity and Calcium Consumed?

Okay so Calcium at 420 and Alkalinity at 150 - 175 Thanks Bang Guy So when it falls next time I raise to those levels. I got that much. But does this constant falling occur for most reefs or not? Also if I switch to Reef Crystals will that simply need less boosting, but still have falling...

    Alkalinity and Calcium Consumed?

Thanks for the input. I was going off Reefnut's thread in the archives here. It shows balanced alk and calcium readings. I had been told to keep calcium between 420 and 450; which puts Alk between 150 and 225. So then give me a target range to shoot for and I can see if everything can be...

    Alkalinity and Calcium Consumed?

System in question is a 210 display with 45 sump. 40 to 45 coral placements (softies, shrooms, zoo's, & LPS) 300 lbs LR and 4 - 6 inch sandbed. I try to mantain Alk - 200 / 220 ppm CaCO3 and Ca - 420 /450 ppm. Every eight days now I have been monitoring the drop in levels. Both values seem to...

    Spot feeding help needed

Hi all. Question is - with a 210 g system (27 " deep) I am having problems spot feeding. I dice up krill or silversides with a pair of scissors to pencil eraser sized pieces, add tank water, and apply with a turkey baster. It's a hit and miss system; and sometimes after you hit the next blast...

    Newbie seeking advice

Not to be devils advocate but here goes. 20 gallon tank - live sand bed - live rock - and equipment - all takes up volume. If you are luck you will 10 to 12 gallons of water in there. Extreme care should be taken when thinking about this small an aquarium. A few inverts, like snails and...

Need Strategy to put hermit crab to sleep for good

Place in zip lok baggie and place in freezer. Fast and humane. Giving it away is giving some one else a problem. It sounds harsh but it is the right thing to do. Don't let others make you feel bad, most who offer advice have slowly killed something in there tank without wanting to and it's...
