    Ro water

Not sure what you mean by RO water doesn't last long??? You can use the ocean water in a jug for water changes, but you want to add either RO or Distilled water for topoff (evaporation) because when water evaporates the salt stays in the water just water evaporates so you just want to replace...

    Preparing for vacation

I would never leave my tank for two weeks without someone to check on it at least a couple times a week. What if the power were to go off, you would be SOL. What are your plans for replacing evaporated water? I would take the phosguard out, if it becomes saturated it will start leaching...

    Protein Skimmer ?

dogstar is right, skimmers pretty much have to drain back into a sump or the tank you cannot push water back up out of them, it won't work.

    My new octopus

if you can get a plastic jar with a plastic screw on lid, drill some holes in the top for water to flow through, then put food in the jar and screw the lid on. It is a really good enrichment exercise for them, shouldn't take him too long to figure out how to unscrew the lid. I would love to...

    Questions

Phophates can be lowered with something like a kent phosphates sponge or with a refugium with macro algae, or water changes (although water changes will just lower them not totally remove them). Your Calcium will come down on its own through water changes and through your tank using calcium, it...

    undergravel for two powerheads

What is the brand of powerhead? You do not need to tubes to use the powerheads, if there is an airline hooked up to the powerhead then remove that, then just submerge the powerheads they should just pump water. If you question is how to mount them, you will either have to contact the...

    Insurance on your tanks?

If something were to happen to your home like a fire or natural disaster your home owners Ins. should cover the tank/stand/equipment, they will not cover anything in the tank. Your Ins should also cover any damage the tank should do to your house should it break. I have never heard of anyone...

    Sand over sand????

yes you can add LS ontop of existing sand, and if you have algae problems now you will probably continue to have them unless you address the reason behind them. More than likely if you give us the run-down on your tank we can figure out why you are having algae problems to begin with.

    NEW tank....need suggestions on filtering

It can be difficult securing baffles to rubbermaid containers, might have more luck putting the return pump in an additional rubbermaid to keep stuff from getting sucked up into the pump. size depends on one thing, how much room do you have? Get the biggest one you can that will fit in the...

    NEW tank....need suggestions on filtering

I really don't think a 10gallon tank is a very good sump, they are just not big enough, you need enough space in the sump for the bubbles to dissapate and a 10gallon is going to give you trouble. Some people use rubbermaid containers if you are looking for a low cost sump idea.

    NEW tank....need suggestions on filtering

Get a Reef Ready tank, and like trainfever said use your 29 as a sump/fuge, I built a sump/fuge out of a 29gallon tank and it did a really good job. All you need is some glass or acylic cut to make baffles and you are ready to go, get a good in sump skimmer (ASM, euroreef). Here is a picture...

sandbeds can become a "sink" for dead food and excess nutrients, by removing the sand they are avoiding a "crash" where the sandbed becomes oversaturated and no longer absorbs stuff but releases it back into the tank Not saying this is a fact just what some people think and what they do.
