Dumbest thing you dropped in your tank?

Well maybe not the dumbest thing I have dropped in a tank but certainly the most embarassing. I maintain tanks as a side job, I was at a fairly new clients (only been a couple times), I was standing on a ladder, reaching towards the bottom of the tank to move some stuff around and since the...

    DSB vx. SSB

One 1" or less is about right for a SSB. Another pro to a SSB is that you can remove and replace a lot easier than with a DSB if you should need to. Some reefers remove and replace part of the sandbed on a regular basis.

    Need Help getting angered!

Can you just suck it up with a hose? Manually removing algae is actually the best thing you can do, exports the nutrients that the algae is using to grow. Carbon is only really effective for about 72hrs after you put it in your filter, so you can remove it after that, unless you want the filter...

Take a second to share your own accomplishments

My biggest accomplishment would have to be my two year old twins, during my pregnancy, I had many problems, I was put on bedrest at 20wks, so I spent the next 18wks either on the couch or in bed, worried each day that my babies may not make it, we all made it through and they are happy healthy...

    soap in tank!!!!!!!

If it has been rinsed then no worries, I use stuff in my tank that has been washed in the dishwasher. unless there is actual soap residue in the cup then nothing bad will happen to your tank.

PH is low calcium is high should I add buffer??

you are still in okay range, Honestly don't obsess, especially if you are testing right after a water change, wait a few days and test again. You will drive yourself crazy if you try to keep your levels at an exact place, each tank reaches its own equilibrium, you do more harm by constantly...

Is there a difference in Salt Mixes?

Anytime you open a new bag or bucket of salt you should mix up some makeup water and test, pH, Alk, Ca. Any salt company can have a mistake, IO has been around a long long time and honestly I think they still have one of the best salts around. I don't like Oceanic, Ca too high, alk and pH too low.

    No Cycle?

Anytime I have disturbed a sandbed I have gone through another cycle, it is shorter but the levels still spiked. If you can keep the sandbed in the tank and keep it from getting disturbed too much then it may not, but if you are taking the sandbed out and putting it back in the tank I would be...

    Pistol shrimp and goby

There is no 100% guarantee, it is very likely if you get a shrimp that comes from the same ocean that they will pair up. I had a pairing of yasha hase/Randalls, it was really cool.

ick out of control - help

Do you have LR or LS in the tank or any inverts? If so FYI you pretty much killed off anything live invert wise in the tank, but there is no going back now. so we pretty much have to press on. I personally think cupramine is the best copper based medication out there. What does your copper...

    Research

For fish, I really like this book, https://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11...6aade37b080240 It is small and I used to keep it in the car so I could take it into the fish store with me, It has just about every fish you would find in a LFS in it, and the guide to its care. It is a must have for SWF...

Anyonw make Glass lids for Aquariums?

just replace the evaporated water with a continuous drip, putting glass tops over an aquarium with MH is generally not a good idea. Evaporation is a good thing in a reef tank.

    New set-up: need all advice

Need to know a few things: We need readings for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, pH, alk and Ca, Salinity, water temp. Those dip tests are horribly inaccurate, if your LFS doesn't have good test kids look at buying them online, I HIGHLY recommend Salifert test kits, or Fast Test/Sea Test kits also...

PH is low calcium is high should I add buffer??

Oh yeah, a lot of people are buying IO and mixing it 50/50 with Oceanic, it gives an almost perfect reading of, pH, alk and Ca. If you have the money to do that, then that is probably your best option.

PH is low calcium is high should I add buffer??

With those salt mixes you just have to do water changes, in tanks with Oceanic salt I have never ever had to add a calcium supplement, occasionally I have had to add a alkalinity buffer but never a pH buffer. Look at your corals and the general condition of the tank. I never had a problem with...

    Just another quick filter question

Oh and I don't mean you need to spend a lot of money on a sump, you can DYI very very cheaply. All you need is a container (some use rubbermaids others use glass or acrylic tanks with baffles in them) a HOB overflow and a return pump. There are tons and tons of threads on how to build a DIY sump.

    Just another quick filter question

Cannister filters trap a lot of debris in the filter pads, and they don't get cleaned often enough so it can contribute to excess nitrates in the system. If you clean your filter pads in them a couple times a week then they are probably fine but most people are doing good if they clean them...

PH is low calcium is high should I add buffer??

well before you do anything make up a batch of Oceanic salt let it age for 24hrs, then test the pH, alk, Ca levels if they are in a good range then go ahead and use it. Honestly I like Instant Ocean, the calcium levels are lower, but the pH, alk, Ca are in pretty good balance, that way it is...
