my 2 percs host a fake coral shroom

Just curious-what is it made of? Is it hard? Where did you find it? Do you have any live corals, mushrooms, or anemones in your tank?

    Phosphates......

There are chemical additives/absorbents you can use to reduce the phosphate, but I am not sure that is the problem. The .5 is not overly high-though 0 would be great (not sure its possible in a tank with fish that we feed) I have had this recurring problem in only one of my tanks-the one with...

what fish should i get for my 55g reef

you originally stated you were looking for schooling fish-The green chromis or the blue reef chromis both school, the blue is more active and gets a little larger, but the color is more striking. If you are looking for activity, the fairy wrasses are terrific. Scots and Exquisites(I have both)...

Live sand or mud in refugium?

Oh, the second part of your question. Yes, it is better if the water flows into each compartment completely before going to the next. There is more exposure-more 'washing/filtering-as the water flows into the refugium compartment then into the next one, rather than just washing over the top of...

    I got a Light for Mother's Day !!!

Happy Mothers Day!! Hooray for your family-getting something you REALLY WANT. I understand exactly what you mean about sharing with people who empathize. My coworkers have absolutely NO interest in hearing about my fish, tank or my garden which is my main hobby. I glow over each new bud when...

Live sand or mud in refugium?

I dont have a refugium but there are several threads on here that will give you the answers you need. My thoughts are that the refugium mud would be a better substrate. Live sand isnt necessary as your tank should already have active bacteria in it and the same water is running through your...

A good buy is a good buy, but intentionally pretending ignorance and taking advantage of a store employee or the store is NOT a good thing. Do you keep the extra change if someone mistakenly gives you too much?

    Advantages/disadvantages of sandbed

Well, I have another comment somewhat different than the others. In a deep sand bed, your denitrification takes place primarily in the lower levels of the sand, not at the surface. Sand sifters, are in fact, beneficial to the tank, actually releasing some nitrogen bubbles from the converted gas...

    Reverse Osmosis For Dummies

I have the Typhoon III ro/di unit. We mounted it on the wall above the garage utility sink. The input line connects to the faucet with an adapter, the waste line tube just drains into our sink. We did not have to do any plumbing at all.

how many cups per gal tropic marin

I use Reef Crystals and Instant Ocean. Both call for1/2 cup of salt per gallon of water. 20 gals takes 10 cups of salt. Try that, then measure it with your hydrometer or refractometer or whatever you have.

Pics of my 30g> comments please!

Chef, I think it looks terrific! Suggest you put black cover-that tank decor stuff-on the back in black as well-it will block view of your overflow and wires and really make your tank pop even more! Wonder how it affects diatoms and cyano-since black absorbs light rather than reflecting it...

    sun coral

Not too much light(shaded from brights) med water flow, feed each polyp individually when open-small chopped shrimp with zoe is what I feed or sometimes a 'wash' of invert food.

    Sun Coral

OK, Sufunk, Educate this old lady. What is the cup method? I chop up shrimp, krill etc. soak it in zoe, then spot feed these little suckers with a pair of tweezers. The tank the Sun Coral is in has 260W PC with one additional 48" stip on it sitting close to the top. My BTA is about 6 inches...

What Do You Do When You Change Your Water?

No, I am giving you advice about what has worked for me for the past 40 years of fishkeeping, may I add successful fishkeeping. Very few peole know everything about everything and the best teacher is experience. Like the cook who makes great biscuits and doesnt have to measure anything. When...

    protein skimmers

It seems everyone has their own 'best' preference. The skimmer is such an important part of successful reef keeping that it is not the place to skimp. I have the large Euro -Reef and LOVE it. I dump the cup every other day. It makes skads of nice wet foam and is so easy to clean, plus comes with...

    Sun Coral

Sun Corals do best out of the light, in a shaded cave where you can get to them easily for feeding. Usually specimens are small and should fit in your nano with no problems. but they are a little difficult since you have to feed the polyps individually when they open(which is why I stay up all...

    Noctornal cleaner shrimp

My cleaners stay hidden when the lights are on, but they rush out for food, grab it, and run back into the rocks. After the primary lights are out and the moonlights on, everything comes alive (except the fish who are all tucked in)
