    DSB Particle Size?

Mad, not to change the subject, but where do you plan on getting southdown. Being a fellow Wisconsinite, I have not found it anywhere. If they sell it in the Milwaukee area, let me know where.

    live rock surprises

I have had my tank for over a year with no new LR added. Everynow and then something new pops up. The 2 most recent things were a 4-5 in. worm that was a very bright solid yellow. Looks like a bristleworm or a centipede. Came out in the daylight. Also new is a new type of corraline algae. Purple...

    Something in the water

About 1-1/2 months or so ago, my RO unit started leaking, so I started using tap water to top off, and disconnected my RO unit. I tested my tap water for ammonia, nititres,ph(7.6), nitrates, phosphates and copper. All tested 0. So I figured it might be OK to use for awhile until I got my new RO...

    COTW: Bubble coral

stpabr, No, he does not host the bubble. He hosts the carpet that you can just see the edge of. Just a camera hog!. No he doesn't bother the bubble at all either.

    COTW: Bubble coral

Mine is definately a center piece in my tank. It is at the size of a soccerball when fully expanded. Actually , I have 3, but the other 2 are smaller. They are hardier then my other lps, slower to react to bad water condition. I also feed them meaty foods about once a week, and the next day...

    Maxxima RO/DI question

Javatech, Those seem like a pretty good price, good units? I know there are different qualities when it comes to filters in the units, and want something that is good, but not going to kill my pocket book. Do you have this unit?

    low light anenome/coral pics?

Sorry to say, but in my opinion, you do not have the lighting to keep an anemone. You have about 1.8 w/gal. Most anemones need higher intensity light to survive. Clowns don't need an anemone(even though they are cool together).

    Maxxima RO/DI question

I am going to buy a new RO/DI, and was wondering what the differences were between the MAX Hi-s, and the regular Maxxima RO/DI. Which is better, or are both the same. I am looking at MAX35 Hi-S, but am open to suggestions.

DSB with no clean up crew.

I would agree with Birdy about the worms and infauna being more benificial to a dsb. IMO snails do a better job as far as a cleanup crew, so if hermits are not available stick with snails. Conches are good sand cleaners. Also, someone correct me if I am wrong, but a sand siftiing goby may do...

    flower pot decay

I also have a flowerpot that was going into a slow decline. I have had it for about 6 mos. or so. It lost about 1/2 of it's tissue and the tentacles were only extending about a 1/2 in. I left it, and lately it is looking alot better. It's tentacles extend out 3 inches and is getting its color...

How deep of a sand bed do you need to lower nitrates?

Yes, for a dsb, to help finish the nitrification cycle(turn nitrates to nitrogen gas) you should have at least 4 inches of a fine grain sand. 4-6 inches is the norm on this board for a dsb. The sand needs to be that deep to have anaerobic bacteria for nitrate reduction.

    Purple tipped acropora

My lfs has an acro advertised as a purple tipped. They have had it for about 2 weeks under VHO, and it is completely brown. It never had any color to it since they have had it. I realize that this is normal with poor lighting. Normally how long does it take before it starts showing color once...

    live rock arrangement benefits

I have the lr sloped up the back of the tank also. I think it looks better and seems to open the tank up a little. When stacking the rock, though, make sure it is loosely stacked, with a lot of openings and hiding places for the fish. The water has to be able to circulate aroung the LR, so it...

Problems with Extension cords for MH?

I have an extension cord (about 10ft) for my 250 watt ballasts And have no trouble firing them. . I was a little nervous about using a standard indoor extension cord to push that much current thru, so I got a heavy duty outdoor cord, cut it to the length I wanted, and put a new end on it. No...

    Fish stores in Wisconsin

I was down in Madison last summer, and there was a few decent stores near the beltline hwy. One is just west of the park st/beltline hwy intersection. I found a couple more East of therre. They are decent as compared to what I have up here in Wausau. Just get a phone book and go visit all of them.

    Recommendations on return pump

Thanks for the responses. I ordered a mag 12. In the mean time I am using a smaller utility pump to get the water back up to the tank. I think it will be fine for a couple days til my new pump gets here.
