    Specific coral tank(LPS v. SPS v. soft)

I am just bumping, I'd like to hear some input also. I have a mix of softies and LPS. All seem to go well together, except the toadstool leather died for an unknown reason. Maybe too much light.Who knows. I am running about 6.5watts/gallon. I'd like to know if I can mix sps with them.

    20,000k metal halides

Not quite sure what you mean by "Are the 20k bulbs all that or what", but as for a recommendation, I like the 10k bulbs. 20k are a little on the blue side. Supplement with actinics and you will be able to have almost anything in your tank. I have used ushio and blueline, and like the ushio...

    Can't Corral my Colt coral?

I use the toothpick method and it works great. Yosemites graphic is exactly how I do it. After about 2 weeks remove the rubber band and toothpicks. ( I think yosemite was referring to his graphic when he said "black". The needle is black in the graphic.

    The Fish Room Is Complete

Sounds like it could be a really awsome tank. Congradulations on getting it done, but if you are like most of us, it will never be completely done. You will always be looking for ways to improve it.(Hmmm, I wonder if I can fit a 600 gallon tank on this side of the room?)LOL:D And yes, I think I...

    Metal Halide help and Questions

Unless you live in a warm climate, with no A/C in the house, then you can get by withoout a chiller. I would mount the bulbs 8-10 inches above the water. If you are planning on building an enclosed canopy to house the mh's, then I would recommend removing the glass tops. You will have more...

    What does high phosphates do?

I was just wondering, besides causing algae blooms, what damage do high phosphates do. I have only read that it will cause algae blooms, and that indirectly, algae can cause problems in a reef. I want to know if phosphates directly damage or poison corals or inverts and how? I do not have a...

Who uses/ has an RO system... who uses tap water? BE HONEST

I use RO water, even though my well water parameters are 0 trates and phosphate, with a ph of 7.6, straight out of the faucet. The way I figure it, Why take the risk with a very expensive saltwater setup. I want to know what I am putting in my tank. In my freshwater tanks, I use tap and have had...

Can anyone tell me a good hardy coral?

An lps coral that is pretty hardy is a bubble coral. You have the light so most any lps and some sps will do.Just do some research on care before buying. Also hammer corals are pretty hardy.Brain corals are cool too.

    colt frag

I use the tooth pick method also, and it works great. I leave the toothpick in for about 3 weeks. They are always attached to the LR by then. It is surprising how hard you have to push to get the toothpick to pierce thru the colt. The first time I did it, I figured that it would slide right thru...

Why cant they come up with a bio-media that can breakdown nitrates?

I will bite on this topic. You raise an interesting question why manufacturers can't develop a wet dry that will reduce nitrates. I believe that it would be very difficult to do with a traditional wet dry. Doesn't matter what type of media. There is too much oxygen present due to the current and...

    Fragging and Dead Snails

I have had success fragging colts. What I did is cut the stem, with a razor, diagonally down where they branch. Then I stick a toothpick perpendicular to the stem right at the bottom of the frag. Stick it all the way thru. Then I rubber band the toothpick to a piece of live rock so that the cut...

    metel halides question

What jjboods said, but if you can get the ballasts and mogul sockets, then bye the correct bulbs(if they are compatible with the ballasts), then you could make a hood and save yourself some $$. Most likely the bulbs your friend has will not be good for a reef.

    carpet ate my flamehawk

Sorry for your loss. Carpets are known for taking out fish. mine has taken out a few fish in my tank(including a 6 in hippo tang. Grr!), and tried to trade him in at the LFS, but they wouldn't take him. They are kind of cool though.

    help with lighting

Can't say I've heard of a 195 watt mh, but I would recommend the 250. It is a little more expensive, but with the better lighting, it will open up possibilities for a variety of corals. 175 watts is enough for a lot of corals also, especially if you supplement with VHO's or PC's.

    LTA losing tentacles

I have had an LTA for about 5 months now and is growing and seems healthy for the most part. It had a run in with a powerhead when I first got it, but recovered just great. The problem that I am having with it is that some of the tentacles seem to break off, or disconnect at the midway point...

    What about shrimp or crab.

Hermit crabs would be a good start to cleanup crew. What sized tank are you talking? and what are you going to keep in it. Peppermint shrimp and cleaner shrimp are a nice choice also for a smaller tank.

    Colt Coral

I think it may be a normal condition. I had one which I fragged, so I have a couple and they close up on occasion. If it is opening back up fully, I wouldn't be concerned as long as water parameters are good. Mine close up if a fish swims into it. Sometimes it closes up for no apparent reason...
