    rldavisou's 120 Starphire Diary

This is the manufacturer's stock sump setup. The eggcrate will be taken out, as I don't plan on using bioballs or anything. If I use any mechanical filtration, it will be a filter sock in this section. The center section will be a refugium. The skimmer will go in a walk-in closet on the...

    rldavisou's 120 Starphire Diary

The only plumbing the tank came with was the bulkheads, so I went to Home Depot today to get some overflow parts. Nothing is glued, just dry fitted.

    rldavisou's 120 Starphire Diary

I decided against building my own stand, and went with the one from the tank manufacturer. Although I have the woodworking skills to build one (I spent every summer from ages 13 to 20 working for my grandpa at his cabinetry shop), I don't have the tools or the time. The stand will be finished...

    rldavisou's 120 Starphire Diary

I took delivery of my new 120 rimless tank on Sunday. I'm totally stoked! I'm not sure if I can say where I ordered it from, so I won't, unless someone tells me it's ok. I'm really happy with it so far, with a few very minor exceptions, which I will address later. The tank has Starphire glass...

    AquaC question

I've decided to go with an AquaC skimmer, and I'm going to order one this week, but I've got a question: What does the drain fitting do? It seems to be advantageous, the way all the sites talk about it, but I don't see what it does. Does it just allow the whole skimmer body to be drained...

    My new 210 starfire journal

would you mind snapping a pic or two of your refugium now that it's up and running? I'm trying to get some ideas for designing my own, but the way that one's set up, I may just go with a pre-built one.

    How do GSPs spread?

Star polyps are some of the few corals that can actually reproduce sexually in our tanks. They can release up to hundreds of spores at a time. I used to have a pic of a colony releasing spores, but I can't find it on my computer. It was the most terrifying thing I've ever seen, lol. I don't...

    Live Rock?

You sure can. All you need is a hammer and a chisel. You can break it into any shape you want. Just remember that if you order it through the mail, it will cause at least a mini-cycle, if not a full one, even if it's already cured. There will be at least SOME die-off while it's in transit.

    ophiura got me scared...mystery urchin

It looks like my urchin that I've had for about 8 months now. Mine's called a Purple Urchin. Very cool. Mine chows down on any algae or detritus it comes across. It mainly stays behind the rocks until lights out.

    Tank Capacity

The foxface is not generally considered reef safe, but you may have gotten lucky and have a specimen that doesn't nip at your corals. It's a game of chance, really. Watts per gallon is an outdated way of thinking about the appropriate level of lighting for a tank. However, since you said you...

    Derasa not feeding

I woke up this morning and my clam had died. There was basically nothing left of him, save for the shell and a couple of pieces of his outer mantle. I can see a few chunks of tissue floating in the tank, but I'm wondering if something ate him. I have hermits, snails, a false perc, and a coral...

    Derasa not feeding

Thanks for your help, guys. I don't have the camera anymore, but the clam is now about 3/4" below the surface of the water, right in the middle of the tank where fluorescent lights give off the most lumens. His mantle looks pretty much the same as in the pic, but I did some reaquascaping and...

    Derasa not feeding

I'm at work, but I just emailed my wife and she said it's opening and closing the siphon...not quite sure what she means, but she said she can see down inside.

    Trach brain placement

Sorry, that probably would have helped. It's a 30 Long with 192 watts pc. 17" deep.

    Trach brain placement

I just bought a trachyphylia brain coral. I've read that they do better low in the aquarium, but I've got PC lights. Where should I place it?

    Derasa not feeding

Understood. It was under MH at the LFS, so I'll place it as high as possible and see if it likes that anybetter. Right now it's about 2/3 of the way towards the top of the tank.

    Derasa not feeding

I got tricked into buying a carnation coral about 8 months ago, and that's right near the clam. I can shuffle things around a bit for the benefit of the animals, but I like the way it looks right now.
