    Taking pics of Reef?

Any good digi camera will work fine. I use a sony 5.1 mp, model dsc-w5. I havent taken anything lately. It isnt so much the camera, as it is learning on what settings to use to get the proper pictures.

    IOTM:Crabs I- Emerald crabs

3 Emerald crabs in my 60...one huge and 2 smaller ones. None have ever exhibited any aggresiveness toward fish or other inverts. THey seem to be great at cleaning up debris, especially when loose nori or cheato sink to the bottom of the tank. They share a tank with a couple of large zebra...

    Dying Anemone???

What size is your tank? In a small tank, a dead anemone could cause a toxic mess. Do you have a quarantine tank? How long did you acclimate and by what method? at is your lighting...they need VERY GOOD lighting, preferably MH....

Pet store problem, Tell me if im wrong. Please.

We have all had fatalities. It is part of the hobby, an unfortunate part. After 4 days, if the fish dies, it is most likely due to conditions in the tank. But even with the benefit of the doubt, and the tank is pristine, expecting to be refunded the money after 4 days is pushing it. Could have...

    Zoo's Jumping Off of Rock

I once had an anemone that was depressed, by the way. He left the tank to seek psychiatric evaluation. In any event, zoos will "disconnect" periodically from the LR. This is a way for them to spread around the tank. Mine drop off periodically, and reestablish in other parts of the tank...but...

calcium is 540. ph is only 7.4, help!

hmmm....second time I have heard about people using this, and having high calcium...deja vu, but don't know from where... Anyone good at chemistry? Could the Kent's product be locking up or doing something to keep the calcium from being absorbed properly if it is added during a water change...

calcium is 540. ph is only 7.4, help!

That wouldnt account for high calcium anyway, just poor pH/alk if not mixed correctly. What additives do you use? Some buffers can throw calcium off. IO is usually very low in calcium, so I am wondering why you could have such high calcium. It must be in something you are adding. You aerate? Do...

    Activated Charcoal ?

Be wary of leaving carbon in too long. It eventually, depending on bio load etc...gets used up. Most reefers say 2-3 weeks is the max for carbon to be beneficial. After that time, it leaches back into the system, similar to a phosphate sponge.

calcium is 540. ph is only 7.4, help!

I'll venture an educated guess here....you arent circulating your mixed water for more than 24 hrs maybe? PROPER water changes are important to the alk/pH relationship. Do not add buffers to raise pH, buffers PROTECT pH. That is all. Raising pH is done by doing proper water changes, having good...

    feather duster overload

No problem with having as many filter feeders as possible. They help "clean" the water, and give off very little waste. Send some to meeeeeee!

    Should I start using additives???

Simple answer.....no. Your coraline growth may be due to lack of a steady pH/alkalinity/calcium level. The only additive you should be considering in this case, would be the 2 part b-ionic. This will help with stabilizing your buffer sytem and getting proper parameters for growing coraline...

    Activated Charcoal ?

I have a wet/dry i use that has it running on 24/7. I do change the media every two weeks or so to prevent any nitrate buildup, and it is turned off during feedings for an hour or so. There are no fast and hard rules, I have heard reliable people say they rarely use carbon to people like me who...

    Stocking Water - Beginner

What kind of system are you planning on having? For fish only, sg of 1.020 or so is fine, but for reef tanks, you need to be around 1.025. You need to determine if the sg of what you are collecting is close to what you want to keep.

My CBS caught and killed a fish?!?!?!

Most likely, the fish may have been already sick. CBS's have a bad rap, as they are the first ones to jump on something unhealthy. They are "programmed" to look for disease and maladies, to a lesser degree than their cleaner shrimp cousins, but that is what shrimp do. I have never seen any of...
