Is Metal Halide lighting alone enough?

What I want to keep: Mushrooms, leathers, Anemone, clams, and possibly a sponge (I'll take this off if it makes a difference). 90 gallon. What I would like for equipment: I really like the look of a black stand with no hood and two pendants hanging from the ceiling. 2x250(400) Watt 10000+K MH.

The more LS and DSB, the better? Interesting question inside.

Ok, so the the premise that the more LS and DSB in a system the better, I've come up with an idea. Lets say you have a nice 5 inch DSB in your main tank (90 gallon). Now lets go down into the sump (55 gallon). The water table goes up to about 14 iinches in the sump (so you have room for the...

    Newbie needs some advice

From what it looks like you've already cycled the tank. If the amon and nitrs are 0 then it's cycled. It's time to put in the clean up crew.

Uncurred LR to cycle a 90 gallon

I'd like to think about starting my tank with about 100 lbs of uncurred live rock. Thus I have a few questions/concerns. 1) Will the smell from the die off be 'terrible'. Think coming from a woman's view because my wife isn't to thrilled about the whole idea in the first place. The tank will...

    Shedding Cuke!!!!

If a cuke dies, it releases a toxin that can kill your whole tank right? How long after it dies does it release the toxin? Sorry to ask a question inside your question, but I though the cuke people would be looking :).

    Lighting for a 90 gallon?

"NO Output" light would be bad :). From what I've been reading "NO" means 'Normal Output' and is used for dusk/dawn type things. I guess my real question is, if I use MH for my lighting ... will that be enough?

    Lighting for a 90 gallon?

If I get 2 250-watt 12000K MH and then use to 4 foot florecents from work (these are called "NO" right) will that be a good lighting system for someone who wants all kinds of coral and clams? Thanks for your time.

Pumps for in AND out from the sump

Ok, how does a overhang overflow work ... it has to bring the water up over the edge of the aquarium right? How does it do that without a pump?

Pumps for in AND out from the sump

I'm probably missing something here but ... if you use a pump to take water from the tank to the sump and a pump to take water from the sump to the tank, aren't you going to eventually have a problem because you won't be able to sink the pumps to pump the exact same amount of water? Just seems...

LFS just puts LR in a box, no water. Is this bad?

I wouldn't want the water that the LFS has. However, I don't want the baby starfish, copepods, little mushrooms, tube worms, etc dieing because they are out in the open for to long.

LFS just puts LR in a box, no water. Is this bad?

I'm currently looking to find a good LFS to rely on. I've run across this particular LFS that takes the LR out of their tanks and puts it into a box ... no water. It seems to me that this is a good way to get alot of die off and any little critters could/would be lost in this situation. Am I...

Metal Halide ... cheap, is this right? What am I missing?

Ok, so what wattage would I need? Can I get by with a 175, or should I get a 250 watt? Edit: Oh, and what would a reflector be? Can I just use a mirror?

Metal Halide ... cheap, is this right? What am I missing?

I'm new the the lighting business so I've been trying to learn what I will need for SPS coral and clams. I've been doing research and metal halides seem to be the best, but expensive. I've found a place that seems to be very cheap. What am I missing? Ballast: 175 watt metal halide encased...
