    Hermit crab molt?

Do hermit crabs molt? I came home last night to see the body of a scarlet reef hermit laying in the sand. An empty shell wasn't nearby. Sure looked like a dead crab but then I couldn't figure out how it would die. Also thought that if they died they remained in their shell. The only thing...

    Reading test results

I don't know if my test kit says anything about relating toxic ammonia to temperature and pH. I guess I should actually read the directions. So I guess my answer is I just go by what I initially read from the test tube. By the way, to convert your Farenheit temp to Celsius use the following...

    florida vs fiji

I've heard that you have a much greater chance of getting unwanted hitchhikers such as mantis shrimp on Florida live rock.

    Shrimp compatability

I thought the 1" to 3-5 gallons was only for fish, not inverts.

    I need help part 2

Depending on what kind of anemone you get you'll probably need some pretty good lights. When I started up my salt water tank I didn't want to shell out the money for good lights so I told myself I was just going to do a fish only tank. Well....after a couple of trips to the lfs and seeing the...

    Shrimp compatability

I have 3 peppermint shrimp and a coral banded in a 55 gal. Could I add a couple scarlet shrimp and a couple fire shrimp? I understand their contribution to the bioload is negligible?

    Pairing Clown Fish

I want to get a pair of clown fish in the hopes of one day they'll breed. I've heard the best way to do this is to get them while they're still very young. What size does this equate too? I was in the lfs yesterday and they had a tank full of false perculas that were all between 1.5" and 2"...

    Does aiptasia move

Aiptasia definitely move. They're a type of anemone. I had a huge one in my tank, tentacles all flowing freely everywhere in the current. Then I added 3 peppermint shrimp. The next morning the aiptasia was pretty shriveled. It moved all over my tank, I suspect to try to get away from the...

    Light for mushrooms.

I have 440 watts vho light over a 55 gal. half daylight and half actnic. Where is the best place to place mushrooms? Top of tank, middle, bottom, under rocks in the shade?

    Food Variety

I've been told that a great way to feed your reef is to make your own food. There's plenty of diy sites that lists ingredients but basically you can go to the seafood counter at your supermarket and get raw shrimp, scallops, whitefish, squid, etc. Just stay away from the oily fishes like...

    Marine Biology?

Check out a couple of college websites. They generally lay out their degree programs and list the courses you'd have to take. Marine biology is a science so you'd be expected to take lots of science classes i.e. chemistry, mathmatics, maybe a little physics, statistics, etc. Texas A&M has a...

    Too much light?

Can you harm certain corals with too much light? Right now over my 55 I have approximately 160 watts of no lighting. I have some star polyps and mushrooms. Tonight I'm upgrading to 440 watts of vho. Should I take precautions to place the mushrooms and polyps in the shade for awhile? I'm...

    white haze on glass

You know....now that you mention it I didn't have this problem before I switched to southdown sand. My tank was pretty cloudy for a couple of days so I bet it has something to do with the aragonite dust somehow bonding to the glass of the aquarium. Thanks for the insight!:)

    diy bulkheads

Has anyone made their own bulkheads? I'm thinking all you really need is a threaded pvc connection and an o-ring or gasket of some sort.

    Reef feeding

I was reading on a diy site about making your own reef food. Basically, the ingredients are squid, fish, vitamins, shrimp, spinach, and some others I can't remember. Blend these up and voila! You have reef food. Does anyone do this? What specifically do you use to feed corals?

flow rate through a 3/4" bulkhead

If you want to try your hand at hydraulic engineering then here's the equation for an orifice flow, which is exactly what a submerged bulkhead is: Q = CxAx(2gh)^(1/2) where: Q = flow rate in cubic feet per second C = discharge coefficient. Using 0.75 for this value would be conservative. If...

    white haze on glass

I've gotten this white haze or something on the glass of my aquarium. I can't rub it off with the algae scraper. Does anyone know what this might be and how to get rid of it? It's very annoying!

    cerith snail behavior

I added about 20 cerith snails to my 55 about two weeks ago. I haven't seen any since then. I know they like to burrow into the sand but is that where they continually live? I'm beginning to think they all burrowed in and then died or something. I have 4-5 inch Southdown sand bed.
