cheap way to make a stand ?

Another idea to add a little strength/stability: cement the blocks together... HD has pre-mixed cement in caulk tubes. Then use a couple C-clamps to clamp the top board to the top blocks.

My DIY Stand is finally done...

... and the distance from floor to plywood top is 33.5 inches. Really seems like a good viewing height to me. I also wanted the extra room under the tank for all the sump stuff.

My DIY Stand is finally done...

Thanks for the comments! NanoAmbiance, Here's what I did: - Used regular 2X4's for the frame. - Glued each joint and used rust proof 3-inch deck screws (Deck Mate brand from HD). - Installed the flooring from 1/2 inch regular plywood. - Installed the top from 1/2 inch regular plywood. - Used...

My DIY Stand is finally done...

Here is the finished stand... Was painted with a semi-gloss oil based paint. Total cost to make this was $168 --- but I spent way too much on some high priced (over priced) primer, paint and brushes - $57!

My DIY Stand is finally done...

Just thought I'd share some pictures of my DIY stand that I just completed. It's for a AGA 90gal RR. This first pic shows the frame. I used a 2X6 for the front horizontal support so I could do without a middle vertical. This allows for easy access to the sump. I also left room in the back corner...

    opinions on....

Go to the ecosystem web site and send them an e-mail. I've been planning out a new sump and they were good enough to mail me plans on how to build my own to be the same as theirs. If you already have a spare tank, all you have to do is add some baffels at the locations shown in their plans...

    My DIY stand

How tall is the stand? From this angle it looks like it could be pretty top heavy once the tank is filled. You might want to think about bolting the stand to the wall to avoid any chance that it could tip over.

Tank on new stand water test started

Nice looking stand. One suggestion if you haven't already done so.... You might want to consider painting the inside of the stand with a good mildew resistent paint. It would help with rot and decay over time.

Fuge/Sump Ques.: Flow from Return line or overflow

The last picture that cboyfan2020 posted shows having some water diverted away from the skimmer right to the refugium and from there back to the main tank. Is there really that big of a problem sending skimmed water to the refuge? The end result is that the fuge is just a second 'filter' in...

Fuge/Sump Ques.: Flow from Return line or overflow

hip68... Yes, some believe it better to have the fuge fed by water coming directly from the tank. Then again there seems to be a lot of people out there feeding it from the return pump. I'd love to hear more opinions. When I posted this design originally Bang Guy had some great comments on...

Fuge/Sump Ques.: Flow from Return line or overflow

Here's my 2-cents on where to put the ball valves -- wouldn't hurt to have one at the end of a Tee to use to make water changes easy. HTH

Fuge/Sump Ques.: Flow from Return line or overflow

Just to add to what KrUnk said... ball valves are a good idea but Single Union Ball Valves are even better in places you think you might want to do disconnects. For example, replacing a pump.

    Canopy and Stand plans

jagermeister - I did the model in SolidWorks. It's all 2X4's --- all the boards are the same. I wouldn't use anything less --- this should be more than strong enough for a 90gal.

    Canopy and Stand plans

Hope this helps... It's for a 90 but the same idea can be done for your 55. Is your tank drilled? This design leaves room in the upper left corner for the built in overflow.
