    Romaine Lettuce is good

I've added romaine lettuce as a part of my yellow tang's diet for over 8 years. Mostly as a treat. Coupled with a variety of frozen mysis, prime reef, bloodworms and enriched brine, I believe romaine to be a nice treat for my tang. In fact I've tried nori and have had little luck getting my...

Showing off blue with red skirt zoanthids

Graham - Would you mind sending me an email as to where you acquired those sweet looking zo's. Nothing even remotely close in the LFS's in this part of the world. Thanks Jeff jkirsh2000@yahoo.com

    Hippo Tang?

If I were to add one, I'd try to get one similar in size to the yellow tang. Also, I'd rearrange rock to create some new "territories" to prevent the yellow from chasing the hippo all over. Spinner

    The going rates

FWIW - The most common mistake a person can make in starting a small business is not understanding the cost of doing business, and whether the proposed income can support the costs. While it's important to know what other maintanence companies charge in other parts of the country, it is much...

    Live Rock Cycle. Nitrates???

Did you use or are you using RO/DI water? Could be a result of the water you used. Also, as rock is taken from a tank to another tank, it is not uncommon for some die off due to exposure to air. I wouldn't get too stressed at this point, nothing in your pix looks terribly out of the ordinary...

    Can this coral be saved?

Neowind - Is this the coral you asked about earlier today? This one looks like it will make it. A couple of the ends don't look so great, but if your tank has good water, light and circulation, I'd bet it will be just fine. I think you got a pretty good buy. Spinner

Need help on leathers before I buy.

The stinging, if not for a prolonged period of time, will more than likely not kill the coral. However, if the anemone has repeatedly stung the coral, it could prove fatal. I'd pass on the deteriorating leather - the downside is its complete demise in your display tank. If the others are just...

Need help on leathers before I buy.

If they do not look like they are disintegrating, but just "droopy" I'd give it a chance. But fyi, I've also been know to take in stray puppies and carnival goldfish for my pond. I'd be concerned if you noticed any deterioration on the tips of the coral. FWIW Spinner

    Tridacnid shot

Graham - Great looking clams. What do you feed and what type of lighting do you have. Lately, my the mantles on my clams have not been opening as wide as before. Water parameters are good, temps are good as well. Just can't pinpoint the the problem(s). Spinner

    grr cyano outbreak.

Skirrby - How long has the tank been set up in its present location? It's not uncommon to have cyno outbreaks during the summer months. I've got no scientific reason why except that more sunlight (direct or indirect) may be hitting the tank and that ambient air temps are typically higher with...

    Coraline booster?

I'm not a real big fan of Aragamilk as it often gets as hard as a brick in the bottle and becomes pretty unusable. I've had fabulous success with Tropic Marin's Biocalcium. It's a powder that I either mix into my make up RO water or add directly to my sump. Supposedly, it can be added directly...

Melody - How do you reduce a picture to less than 500 x 500. I continually get a message that says my pics are too large? Thanks.

    Candy Cane Coral Caulastrea Furcata

Kip My answer was intended to imply that candy canes are not difficult to keep. Unlike corals that must be directly fed, candy canes in my tank have thrived without direct feeding. Rather, good light and a nice, gentle current seem to do wonders for them. Jeff

    Candy Cane Coral Caulastrea Furcata

I've had mine for nearly two years and have never directly fed it. It is always open and "happy". If I could figure out how to get pictures to post, I'd show everyone. Spinner

Installing a Reef Tank into a Divider Wall

It's quite doable and with enough space, you can have a pretty elaborate system. Since the overflow and return will be on the one end "behind the wall" ample circulation is a must. Spinner

So you want to get rid of that ol' glass top.......

I use egg crate on the back 6 " of my tank with no noticeable loss of light. I use standard 1/2" eggcrate cut to fit tightly. I only use it on the back part as the canopy would serve as a "backboard" if a fish ever tried jumping over the side or front. The back is open (ie no backboard)...

500 gal reef converted to 850gal reef

Steve - My reference to drawing water from various depths - Are all pumps for your skimmers drawing from the sump or are they directly drawing from the main tank and plumbed to each skimmer? Not one of my better questions, but I do tend to babble nonsensically when I see a tank like yours...

Fire!!! or why I no longer like Rio pumps...

Anglachel - I did not notice any calcium deposits or apparent damage to the impeller (sp) of the burned pump. In my case, the cord burned and separated from the pump unit. It was not noticeable. Now I regularly check my pumps for detritus and calcium build up and clean them every couple of...
