Do not go with carbon. Use polyfilters instead. They will not leach any bad stuff out once they are full, they are superior to carbon in absorbsion of bad stuff like heavy metals, and turn color to let you know they have expired. Further the color will tell you what they are aborbing.

FWIW, I would follow Bang's guidelines and start dripping kalk, and add a polyfilter. Dripping kalk will raise the alk, and precipitate the phosphates, which sound like they are high, even though your testing shows them low. I have a feeling they are bound to substrate and rock, and the algae...

This is definately an end cap issue. There is some juice getting through, but not enough to light the tubes. Buy new 3 piece end caps. And keep an extra pair on hand at all times.:cool:

I use kalk and Tropic Marin's Bio-Calcium. They work great.
