    BIG Tank Pics

We just started in Oct 2002, but we picked up a used tank to get started, and it came with a bunch of corals. So it's a mix of new and old. The tank was very established, which is definetely a plus!

    Decorator crab?

And here's my "Decorator Urchin." These guys are worse than the crabs -- they are like velcro!

Here's our 180. We just started up in October, so we've got a ways to go...

    Decorator crab?

I love the decorators, but I never see mine. They are always hiding in the back, or under rocks. They are very shy and they like the dark. Also VERY sssllllooowww. So depending on your setup you may or may not see them. You should probably target feed them since they are so slow, they don't tend...

adding fish to a 110 gal. reef tank

I have a powder blue and a yellow tang -- they get along great in my reef. No coral nibbling as yet. I also have clown (percula) fish and they are great. I have stayed away from Angel fish because I have read they are not reef safe. But probably depends in the individual and the situation...

    solve this and you win...

I have one of these (I think -- based on the picture!) hiding in a rock. All we see is the tenticles coming out. Unfortunately, it killed our spiny oyster and our flame scallop being as they were situated close. We didn't even know it was there until the two bi-valves died a few days apart. Does...

sump design for a 110 gal tank?

Hi tableforglasses, Here's my sump plans based on all the great ideas from this board. I'm moving my sump down into the basement, so it's a 10 foot drop and 20 foot horizontal.

    Purple bubble algae?

I'm not an expert on this, but last night I took a turkey baster to my tank and blasted all those annoying bubble algaes off the rocks, along with all the other algae. Looks great now. They suggest vacuuming instead, to get the stuff out of the tank, but I just put a sponge filter on my...

    What to feed?

I have 3 cardinals, and they eat everything. They are total pigs. Formula one, two, shrimp, flakes. I'm sure yours are still adjusting. Give them a little time. If you soak the food in phytoplankton or garlic that helps. We fed our new chromis Phytoplex from 3 little fishies at first since that...

Who uses/ has an RO system... who uses tap water? BE HONEST

I have an RO/DI unit on which I bypassed the RO part to get just DI water for the tank (because of the 6x water waste with RO). I have a 180 on which I replace 3 gals a day due to evap. Plenty of algae (red, green, brown, black), so I plan to: 1) replace the DI filter and start using full RO/DI...

Tips for Feeding Formula One and Two

I don't know about you, but I was having a heck of a time trying to crush up the formula one and two cubes after they thawed out. I'd poke at them with a spoon or fork, and they would jump away from me every time. And there were always big chunks left that sang straight to the bottom of the...

Free U-Build It Package to the 150th

See I have this tang, well a couple of tangs actually, in my 29 gallon. I'm concerned about the Power Blue, he's only 6 inches, but I'm not convinced he is self actualized. I mean when he swims near one of the yellow tangs, or the other 2 power blues for that matter, he seems to hold back a...

    What Can I Do

As far as I can tell, from this board, you need to leave the tank empty of fish (host for the ich parasite) for at least 6 weeks before adding new fish. The ich should die off without the host present.

    Hypo

Hi, You should do a search on this forum for "hypo." There is tons of information. Good luck! Here is Beth's writeup: O.S.T. stands for Osmotic Shock Therapy which is commonly referred to in the hobby as hyposalinity [water that is deficient in sea salt]. Essentially, O.S.T. simply places the...

    Does Live Rock carry Ich

Thanks for your thoughts. I have not treated the QT with anything. Just planning to do a hypo, water changes, and fresh water dips for the chromis. I guess I'll need a separate tank for the LR for a few weeks during the hypo. Then like you said I can put it back in after the process and the ich...

    Does Live Rock carry Ich

So I got 6 new Green Chromis from FFexpress on Friday. I put them in a QT because of reading this forum. They have been panting at the bottom of the tank, swimming in circles, and jerking back and forth, and one of them died this morning. Actually three look relatively OK, but 2 more look pretty...

    buying ro/di

I just bought an ro/di unit last week (kent) and here are some learnings: 1) The water output rating is based on 80 lbs pressure and 80 degree water (or something like that!) So if your pressure is 40 (mine is 35) you get half, and if your temp is 60 (mine is 50 coming out of the well) you get...

    size/price of tanks....

I was just pricing new tanks recently, and ended up buying an established reef tank in the classifieds for 35 cents on the dollar. My current take is that for reef you should budget $40/gal for new, and $15/gal for a used setup. That includes all equipment, LR, LS, Fish, Inverts, Corals, etc. to...

    Saving Coralean Algae during move

I'm moving an established 180 gal reef tank tomorrow about 10 miles. Been running for about 2 years, with LR, LS, Corals, Fish, Inverts, etc. I would like to save the nice purple coralean algae that grows on the back of the tank. Any pros and cons to this? After I completely empty the tank, I...
