    Help! New to sumps!

Can't your LFS order it for you, if not, that's one poor LFS you've got there. Also, did you have the sg checked with a refractometer, if not do so. If it's correct I'd just let your top off bring it down slowly, no biggie.

Do I need a new impeller, or a whole new pump?

If you're happy with the pump you have, until this problem, you could buy an impeller first and if that doesn't fix the problem just buy another of the same pumps and you'll already have a spare impeller. But if it's a cheap / poorly rated pump to begin with, probably better to just replace it.

    Rust like algae

Silicates, probably from the sand. Once they're used up the bloom will end, don't sweat it.

    Confused....Why don't my invetebrates survive?

Just a couple of quick thoughts... Have you checked your calcium, it might be low? Have you used any silicone on your tank, some is not aquarium safe? Are you using anthing but RO/DI water? Are you acclimating them correctly? I'd throw two bags of Chemi-Pure in your filter and do a good water...

Need to hard line to sump

Yea but he already said he's not replacing the whole bulkhead so that doesn't appear to be an option. Barbs aren't ideal but they're fine if you double clamp them.

    hellllo againn

Agree. I had one too, on my 55, POS. This was a few years ago, perhaps they've improved, but I kinda doubt it.

Need to hard line to sump

You could buy a PVC barbed fitting that that has a standard PVC fitting on the other sice, then cut the hose you have on there now and use it (the hose) to connect the existing barb to the new barbed fitting with another hose clamp. Then hard pipe it from there. Kinda half-azzed but it would work.

Leaking tank needs patching on the outside

To clarify, I'm not suggesting that it's possible to patch a tank from the outside or that it's a good idea. Obviously properly re-sealing it or replacing it is the way to go, however, if they are determined to try I was just trying to help.

I Dont Know What To Get?

It really depends on how much money, time, and effort you want to put into it. Reef tanks require pristine water quality and expensive lighting, whereas FOWLR tanks are relatively easy to maintain. You could go FOWLR for now, then once you get the hang of it add some easy corals, and go from...

    Filter sock

Typically, the height of the wall between sections 2 and 3 determines the water level in the fuge area. With your design I'm not sure where the water level would be. I'd also definately put a sponge between sections 2 and 3, which would require a second wall. I'd also still recommend three...

Leaking tank needs patching on the outside

See the problem is that you can't patch something on the outside if water is still pushing from the inside. So the only chance you have is to somehow stop the flow from the inside and then patch it from the outside. Lowering the water level will lower the pressure at the leak point too, making...

    Filter sock

Three points I'd like to make. Looking at all the stuff that the sock collects I can't imagine running without one. I get much better tumbling in the fuge section with three openings as I described, not even close. I single center opening just doesn't work as well. Regarding the three wall exit...

To buy or not to buy...?

What type of lighting do you have for the QT? Any moonlights? I run an 8 hour light cycle in my QT with moonlights, less lighting keeps stress down. Also, be careful to match temp and salinity when you do water changes, big swings will also cause stress.

A lot of my fish are dying?

Hi and welcome. These guys have you pretty much covered, the only thing I'd add is that you have to get some good test kits so you can accurately monitor what's going on in your tank. Dip strips are not accurate. I'd recommend either Seachem or Salifert kits, very accurate. And a refractometer...

    Filter sock

I've made three refugiums now so I'm no expert but I have learned a few things. IMO - Running with a sock is the way to go, keeps the fuge MUCH cleaner. Go with the biggest sock you can. I just change the sock out every weekend works great. Wash the dirty one in your washing machhine with...

Common causes of persistantly high nitrates?

So then let me ask this... What do you consider a realistic average nitrate level for a mature (7 years running) fully stocked tank (not overstocked) with the appropriate amount of LR, 1 1/2" live sand bed, good skimmer, and 10% weekly water changes?

To buy or not to buy...?

Sounds like your mind is made up but let me mention two concerns I would have. First, I don't think a YT is a good first fish for any tank unless all the other fish you plan on getting are more aggressive. Second, I'd never buy a fish that already had HLLE. Although it's not contagious, it is a...
