Common causes of persistantly high nitrates?

Could someone elaborate on the concept of Septic Sand? I suspect my sand may be causing a problem, I try not to touch it (ammonia spike) but it doesn't look all that chean. Any suggestions?

Starting up a new aquarium and in need of info!!! please help

I have a feeling you may be underestimating the cost (in both time and money) of setting up a saltwater aquarium. Since you are new to the hobby I would suggest starting out with a nano-cube. They come already completely set up so you won't have to piece them together. You just add live rock...

    QT..?

I'd add a Yellow Tang last not first, even a small one. They're agressive and very territorial. If you go least agressive to most agressive you'll have the best luck. I know it's a good size tank and a small fish, but still it's a good rule. Good Luck!

    Finally have fish and cuc!

Looking good! They make a background that sticks to the back of your tank that looks great. It comes with this clear, oil-like liquid that you put on the back of the tank, then you stick the background to it and squeegee out the bubbles. It looks way better than the ones you just tape to the...

    Sump or no sump?

A sump or refugium won't result in a flood unless you build it incorrectly. But if you do the research and plan carefully I still say it's the best way to go.

    Sump or no sump?

You should just make a refugium out of a 20 gal. tank and problem solved. All you'll need is the tank, return pump, plexi-glass, and a protein skimmer. I bet you could do it for under $200 and you'd have a killer setup. There are some good YouTube vids on how to make them.

Revision on Question Re: Canister Filtration/Surface Aggitation

I made an 18" spray bar but it took me like three or four designs to get it just right. I ended up with one hole every inch, the holes alternate from parallel to the water to at about a 75-80 deg. angle down. The holes that are parallel with the water sit about 1/4" below the water level and...

Would removing the 2" plastic back strip help gas exchange?

Right now I'm running 2 x 10,000K 65w CF, 2 x 65w Actinics, and moonlights. I don't plan on upgrading lighting right now. So I know it's going to limit my coral choices. I'm doing good with shrooms and think I'm going with either a Kenya Tree or a Green Star Polyp next. Given my lighting...
