I've never seen snow in person. It is supposed to get colder here tomorrow but we never get really cold for more than about a week all winter down here. Not that I'm complaining though since I'm a wimp when it comes to cold weather.

You certainly don't need to add more. It is possible that your tank could benefit from more but that doesn't mean that it won't thrive as it is. As long as the nitrates are kept at reasonable levels with water changes etc. you will be fine.

Most people recommend 1 to 1.5 lbs per gallon. It couldn't hurt to have even more depending on what you keep in the tank (room left for swimming) and the ability of the tank to hold the weight. Although I pretty sure you could fill a tank completely with rock and not have to be concerned about...

Why use any tap at all? I'm not in your area but around here I fill up 5 gallon jugs at the little kiosk filter thingies for .75 per 5 gallons. I'd recommend spending the extra couple of dollars to ensure success without creating any avoidable problems.

I do the sides and front with the magfloat every other day or so and scrape the tough spots with a scraper when I do tank maintenance every month or so. I leave the back to grow naturally for the snails to graze on and for the looks of it.

You may have already considered this but since it is inverts dying, is there any chance you introduced copper into the system?

I just bought a couple of battery operated air pupms just to agitate the water some for gas exchange. It normally doesn't get cold enough here for temp to be a problem so I have to hope for now that they'll do the job. One day I plan to try to rig up a powerhead to some type of battery and see...

Sounds to me like a porcelain crab probably. If it has little feather type things it constantly moves to and from its mouth skimming out little floating particles of food. If it is they are harmless and a nice addition. Does it look anything like this? Note the little feather thingies.

You can definately do a reef with PC , you just won't be able to keep everything. You could keep mushrooms, some leathers, and some zooanthids or polyps. You could also keep things like sun polyps which don't need any light at all but depend solely on feeding. HTH. GL.
