Best way to clean a tank?

I was thinking of using a combo of ammonia, bleach, and water to clean my tank is that a good idea? Haha, :) kidding, but seriously, I am going to be cleaning a couple empty tanks and was curious what is 'safe' to use. In the past I have only used a window scraper and water. Can I use any kind...

    **Urgent** - Heater failure

I had an RMA issued on my heater that I suspected of being faulty yesterday (guess I was right), wife came home this afternoon, alarm was sounding, water temp was & is at 72.3 currently. How bad is that temp for the fish (only fish in tank currently) I have a 100w heater loose in the tank (110g)...

Azoo Titanium Heater - Anyone using one?

I purchased their 500w version for my 110g tank (48x18x30) and I am very surprised that it is having a hard time maintaining the temp of the tank! (no lectures on multiple heaters please :)) I am not sure if there is something faulty with the heater or if it just not that good. The heater seems...

GE Digital Timer - Thought I would share my find

I have been looking for a timer(s) for my systems and came across these at Home Depot. They work a little different than the coralife ones, but they look very similar. They are made by GE, which I have always had faith in, so it gives me a little piece of mind. How they work: there are 8...

Foam 'pre-filter' - leave it on or take it off?

I have a couple canister filters (media only inside - Eheim 2229 Wet/Dry w/12L SeaChem Matrix), the intakes came with foam pre-filters. Directions say to leave them on 6-8 weeks then to remove them. Does it really matter if I remove them or leave them on? I figured this is a way to strain out...

    Carbon & Nitrate

Ok... so my 12L of Matrix showed up today! I am going to test the Nitrates now, do a 20% water change, re-test the Nitrates, then I am going to switch out all the current media with the Matrix. I will keep a log of the Nitrate after the switch and report back soon. Wish me luck!

    metal oxidation

What kind of 'metal'? I have a small 1/2" square foil piece from a brine shrimp food 'case' that I found in the tank last week. I guess that is what you get for having a friend watch you tank when you are gone. I can not get to it and wondered if it would cause any issues also.
