    What is it?

Sounds like Aipstaisia. It is an anemone but it is a nuisance anemone. You don't want that in your tank. It will spread like wildfire and take over if it is. What color is it? If it is a kind of brown or purple in color, then it is Aipstasia and you want to kill it. Squirt it with lemon juice or...

If you have a refuseum, do you need a protein skimmer?

I have a refugium in my system and I also have a protein skimmer in my sump. Do I need the protein skimmer if I have a refugium? I have noticed that the algae isn't doing so good, even though I have a 30 watt light over it for 16 hours a day.

    24Hrs New Tank -Still Cloudy?

For a tank that small, you should have only started with 2 fish at first and then add maybe 1 or 2 fish a week after that to let your bacteria build up to the new bio-load.

    Ammonia

To mix the contents. It tells you that right in the instructions. I'm not talking about the vial. I am talking about nitrate solution #2. Read the instructions and it will tell you to shake bottle #2 vigorously for a 30 seconds or you will get innaccurate readings.

    what is die off?

While holding the rock in the water, give it a good shake to work loose anything that is inside the holes. After I cured my rock, I couldn't believe how many holes were in it because they were filled with sediment. Shaking the rock under water will get all of that out. Don't be too aggressive...

I have the same test kit as you and I was getting false nitrate readings because I was not shaking bottle 2 enough. You have to make sure you shake it thoroughly or you will get false readings. Shake it hard for a full minute, then put the drops in.

How coan you tell if sand is live?

Check to see if it is breathing or if it has a pulse. :D Actually live sand means that it has bacteria in it. There may be a few small critters in it but mainly it is bacteria. Nitrite is what your ammonia is turned into by the bacteria, and then the nitrite is turned into nitrate, again by...

    Question about water change

Your new water definitely has to be heated to the same temperature as your tank water. I used to use tap water all the time and I would just mix hot and cold water together until it was right. I then switched to RO water and the first time I did a water change with it, I forgot to heat it...
