    Help with ph please.

Jenn, Don't feel dumb. Asking questions is the smart thing to do. If you don't ask questins, you'll never learn. That is why we are all here, to help one another. As far as what to buy, get a test kit with the four major tests in it. Ph, nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia. It will cost anywhere from...

    Is this normal?

I have a feather duster. I don't know what kind it is but I am told it is not a Hawaiin. Its tube is about 5/16" in diameter with the top section being about 3" long and the lower section 2" long. I noticed last night that the lower section has gotten about 3/4" longer. This morning I cam down...

    HELP, fish dropping like flies

How long has the tank been up? What tests are you doing? What are the parameters? When you do the nitrate test, are you shaking bottle #2 very well? If not, you will get low readings.

Yea Salty, thats what it looks like although a lot smaller. It also does not have the nubs like the one in your pic. I guess that comes with age?

    Found another stowaway

So I'm wiping down the front of my tank. I have two little girls who just love to leave finger prints on it. So I see this blob on the front of the tank. I attempt to wipe it off, when I realize that it is inside the tank. It is maybe 5/16 " wide. I take a closer look and realize that it looks...

    Acrylic scratch removal...??

You could always try buffing the scratches out first with cigarette ashes, that is if you or someone in your house smokes. Take a damp rag and dip it into the ashes and then polish the scratches in a circular motion. The ashes make a very fine polishing medium. It works great removing those...

sump Q + QT tank phenom

1.I use a sump because it gives me a place to hide all the peripherals that take away from the beauty of the tank and because I only have a 45 gallon tank. With a sump, it allows me to add another 10 gallons or so to my system. 2. I would think that something on the rock is fowling the water...

I think the pump is heating my water

I came home today and noticed that the water temperature in my tank was 88.9 degrees(I have a digital thermometer). I checked the heater but it was off. I unpluged it anyway but the water temperature is still 87.6 degrees after 2 1/2 hours. I double checked with a regular thermometer and it...

Salt vs. Salt what's the best?

I was in the hobby 20 years ago and have recently returned. Back then, the only choice you had was either real sea water or Instant Ocean mix. When I got back into the hobby, I was recomended Serasalt mix. It's not bad. Right now I just bought a 5 gallon bucket of Crystal Sea mix. It seems OK to...

    Feather Dusters

Are you sure it's dead? I read somewhere that thw worms will throw their crowns(feather) every once in a while and they will even leave their tubes to move and make another somewhere else in the tank. Maybe it didn't like where you had it in the tank?

    acclimation?

How I acclimate is with the ordinary drip method but with a twist. I set a chair in front of my tank and place a 5 gal bucket on it. I place the newly acquired livestock into the bucket and start the drip from the tank into the bucket. I use one of those plastic connectors for airline tubing...

need help deciding... wet/dry or sump

How much LR do you have right now? How many fish do you have in your tank? It's hard to say without knowing what kind of bioload you have? I would still go with a sump and maybe add some kind of bio material, ceramic rings or even a few bio balls. But it depends how much LR and how many fish you...

    Nitrate Problem!

When you test for nitrates, are you shaking bottle #2 really well? I was getting false readings with my nitrates and it turned out that I wasn't shaking bottle #2 good enough. You have to mix #2 very well. I mean shaking it in the bottle before you put the drops in, not in the vial.

    Help with ph please.

Get a glass and fill it with water from your tank. Then mix in a t-spoon of baking soda. Then pour this mixture into your tank, through the filter if possible. Do this once a day until your PH is where you want it.
