    newbie here

If you can fit the ten gallon tank under your stand, I would convert it to a sump and go that way. If your LFS can drill your tank, I would have taht done for the overflow. Overflow boxes are expensive and are not as reliable as having your tank drilled.

    filling wet dry

Tap water is fine. The problem with tap water is the chlorine and the phosphates in it. The chlorine you can get rid of but the phosphates will promote the growth of unwanted algae. You could use Phosguard in your filter to help fight the phosphates though.

    OK,I'm stumped

When I had crushed coral, I used to vacuum the substrate but now I have sand and I was told not to vacuum the sand. I just move the vacuum around to try and get any debris to float up and then I suck it into the vacuum. I'm using a sump and the filter bag is brand new. I always thought that any...

    OK,I'm stumped

Yesterday I did a 10 gallon water change. I do this every week. I have a 45 gallon tank with another 10 gallons in my sump. I tested the water before the change and it read as follows: Ammonia .50, Nitrite .50, PH 8.2, Nitrate 20. Today I do another 10 gallon water change and the same thing. NO...

    Curious Live Rock Question

If your live rock is not cured already, it will start another cycle in your tank as soon as you put it in. Why dont you just cycle your tank with the live rock? The live rock in my LFS is only $3.79 a lb. It's noot cured though. He can't keep it in stock long enough for it to cure. He gets in...

    New Wet/Dry Filter Opinions

If you have live rock, and you should, you are better off with a sump instaed of a wet/dry system. Just my opinion.

Decided to go the best route

HELLLLOOOOO WISCONSIN! :D I think you're off to a great start. I also have a wrought iton stand. I would rather have a wood stand but it came with the tank. I bought it used. Anyway since you are just starting up, you can mix your water right in the tank. It's a lot easier than having to mix it...

    Just a couple of questions.

I was always told that one snail and one hermit crab for every five gallons of water. That would put you at nine or ten each. That's what I have and it seems to be working good.

    acclimation?

I don't worry about the water in the bag. The LFS is only two minutes from my house. So the fish are only in the bag for ten minutes at the most. Not much time for ammonia to build up. Alsi, my LFS does not feed the fish because they are not in the store long enough. Besides, I always do a water...

    Help Please

How long has your tank been set up? Yes I would definitely put future purchases of live rock into a separate container of saltwater circulating with a powerhead for at least two weeks.

    Go figure

So I buy a Racoon Buterfly today and he wont eat anything. I give him live black worms, live brine shrimp, frozen brine shrimp, marine flakes, marine granuals all of which he showed no interest. Even when the foods floated right in front of his face, he ignored it. I did see him searching all...

How often should water be changed?

The airstones are not for in your tank. They are for in the container where you are mixing your saltwater? You're not mixing the salt right in your tank, are you? I was told that too may bubbles can cause your nitrates to rise. Something to do with too much oxygen in the water. Oh yea, I change...
