I don't think pistol shrimp are the cause of your problems. However, they will eat dead fish, crabs, etc. Not a bad idea to feed them once in a while too. I feed mine every couple of days or if they come out of thier burrows at feeding time.
You've got something in there that's feeding the algae. You could try 'AZ NO3' and 'PO4 minus' I've used both products with success. They work in concert with you skimmer to get rid of Phosphates and Nitrates. But I'd also try to figure out what's causing the algae in the first place.
Don't try to get the algae off yourself. Put the sponge in a dark place in your aquarium and the algae will clear up. Sponges normally grow in dark waters, under overhangs, in caves or at depth. Keep it out of the light.
Anyone have experience with Seio M620 super flow pumps? The instructions say not to use a wave timer. I'm wondering if you could use Digital Aquatics ReefKeeper with soft start without problems?

Yes algae can't grow in the dark. Don't try to rub it off or remove it. If you have hermit crabs they could clean it up. But it must stay in a dark place to survive.
