pretty much as safe as it gets with cucumbers. Sea apples are what you have to watch out for. Along sand cleaning, they are much better than other things sold like sand sifting stars and gobies. The only eat the detritus, not all the fauna in your sand. The only problem I see with them is...

I've seen big, green ones by themselves at LFS before with tangs, angels, and other large fish. Now if your talking about the blue or purple, I don't think it would be a very good idea because I think those don't get as big as the green.

Those are spaghetti(sp) worms, good for cleaning sand and eating leftover food. Toss em back in your tank.
