Do not cycle with damsels. Pick up 2-3 pices of raw shrimp at your local grocery store. Drop them in the tank for 3-6 days then take them out. The amonnia will be sky high then start to drop. just test water after this and wait for the cycle to complete. This is a faser and better way to...

What kind of filter do you have? It sounds like there are either toxins in the water or lack of filtration. How big is your tank?

what are the water parameters? Do not do another 100% water change. What is the nitrate level?

what kind of lights? How small of a tank.

That is a little too much sand I think. A good guidline for amount of sand is: Number of gallons + 50% = lbs of sand. This will give about a 4" sandbed. THIS IS JUST A GUIDLINE!!! Volitan Lion fish are very cool.

DO NOT PAINT IF IT'S SET UP. Painting should only be done BEFORE there is water in. Paint is toxic so any airborn chemicals or drips could wipe you out.
