What type of water for a water change

you replace evaoporaated water with freshwater, not salt, evaporation leaves the salt behind. Should top off daily if you can. Waiting a month is really too long. The salinity rise would be pretty stressful to critters.

    DAS tanks need filter drops?

Ah, seen those before, did not know they had a special name. As to your question, I would treat it like a regular style (is there sucha a thing?) aquarium, and just do what you have found works best for you. Don't add anything unless you know what it is. There is another post on this board...

    Sealing A Tank?

galls tank or acrylic. If glass, I would suggest using silicone specifically branded for use in aquariums, many other sorts contain fungicides or bacteriacides in them, bad bad for reef critters. The aquarium specific stuff costs more, but worth it when you weigh its cost against the cost of the...

    RO Question

pardon my ignorance, PITA? And I am curious if this can be done too. My lfs only sells DI water, not RO. And I have seen those tap water purifiers in a catalog, not much life in them, and replacement filters way costly.

I always thought the white stuff is dead coralline, or its "skeleton" at least.

    Mag-Float Tank Cleaner?

You can always cut a little piece of felt and stick it between the pane and the magnet, that will make it safe for acrylic. The previous warning about sand getting in there still applies.

    measuring algae growth

Since you have the microscope, you might try counting the cells per square millimeter or something. Will need a little bitty ruler or a graduated slide or something to have a reference. Only a wild guess though.

    noisy pump tip

No, my return pump is a Little Giant external. The mousepad idea should work for internals too, just peel the cloth backing off of the foam though.

Hagen Aqua Clear 301 powerhead problems

If you have the air hose connected to it in the venturi, take it off. Its not needed in saltwater applications. And new pumps usually have a lil air trapped in them for a while, but it should clear up within a few hours of it running. After the hose is disconnected of course. If it STILL blows...

    Mag-Float Tank Cleaner?

should be fine, just be careful you don't get a grain of sand between the magnet and the pane you are cleaning. Major scratchage.

    noisy pump tip

Got a fairly noisy pump and want to quiet it down some? Get a mousepad, and put it under the base of your pump. I took an old mousepad I had, cut into 4 squares that I stacked atop each other, and my pump sits on that. Dropped the noise so the only thing I hear is the water running thru the...

    Smallest Reef Tank

In one of my books, the author mentions one renowned reefkeeper building a 1 quart micro reef. Changed a few ounces of the water per water change, and only had like a hermit in it.

    1.something or less nano reef

I love my 65, and its not even close to being finished. And 318 bucks is definitely enough to get a 55 if you go that route, get it drilled, build/buy a stand, and perhaps buy some sand to get halfway started. And I HIGHLY recommend getting it drilled, overflow boxes CAN be more leak/flood prone...

    1.something or less nano reef

I have a 65 myself, Very nice tank. Dunno what your lfs wants for that one, but if you want a tank almost as big, and it will probably be cheaper, you might look at petsmart or walmart for a 55 gallon tank. I know for a fact that petsmart sells 55's for right around 100 bucks with the crap...

    1.something or less nano reef

I tend to agree with PA reef. A 1.8 gallon micro-nano would be cool as hell, but very difficult, and you would very likely not be able to keep any fish in it at all. Perhaps a shrimp, and a mushroom or two, thats about it. Now if you hook it up to a 10 gal or bigger refugium, it will still be a...
